JT Bagwell Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 I have not shot a bow since I was a teenager and I am in my late 30's now but recently I decided that I might be interested in taking up bow hunting for deer. Especially given the fact that I live in Northern Illinois where we have giant Whitetail deer. I have been looking at some PSE bows because that is what I had before but I really don't know much about the newer stuff. Anyone have any advice on something that isn't super cheap but isn't going to cost a fortune and is still good quality. I will likely only go once a week through the end of bow season so I don't know that it is going to get used all that much. It's weird being a newby at something on here. lol Thanks guys Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted October 13, 2014 Super User Posted October 13, 2014 PSE has a great line of bows. The adjustability, speed and how quiet they are for the money is unbelievable. That being said, I just traded my PSE Brute X in on a Mission Ballistic (made by Mathews to compete with PSE, Diamond, Red Head prices) This bow is blazing fast, light weight and very short axle to axle. Doesn't torque bad at all. You can pick one up for anywhere around $400-$500. Good luck and I'll go ahead and be prepaired for the addiction to set it! Bow in hand, midwest rut... nothing like it in the world! 1 Quote

Got back into archery when I was 35 or so. I found a good, used Oregon for $100. I have no urge to push it fast. Still, with uncut 400 spine arrows and 125 grain points, it clocks at 210fps. It has zero recoil. When I shoot at the public indoor range, I have "kids" coming up and asking about it because it shoots right up there with their stuff in many cases. Josh 1 Quote

Josh I've heard good things about those as well but i've never seen one! The Balistic has an IBO of 330fps, no reason with everything added and a good arrow you wouldn't be hitting 280-290fps. No chance of a jumped arrow or ducked arrow at that speed! Quote
Josh Smith Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Dang, you're 10 years younger than I am, Gardner! Ever hear of an overdraw? Here's one: http://www.boneheadbowhunting.com/bow-pro-overdraw-wsnap-it-rest-p-8336.html The Oregon bows were the first ones to send arrows over 300fps. I choose not to push mine that fast, but it'll do it if I set it up to do it. Oregon Bow: I have this problem with splitting arrows inside 30 yards or so. If you want to really practice for deer season, use the bow to hunt squirrel. Eventually you learn to anticipate any jump and aim accordingly. Compared to squirrel, a deer's jump is nothing! Super User clayton86 Posted October 13, 2014 Super User Posted October 13, 2014 Personally I'm a Hoyt fan great bows and they won't break the bank unless you want them to. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 I shoot a Bowtech now and use to shoot Hoyts. Both are awesome. Most manufactures have low to high end bows anymore. You dont need anything extravagant to kill deer. 1 Quote

MDBowHunter Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 The best thing you can do is throw all the names out the door and go shoot all the bows that are in your price range, and find the one that fits and feels best. Pretty much all the big names in the bow world are building decent stuff. You will be able to take a $200 bow that fits you and feels good to you and shoot it way better then a $700 bow. Also most bows in your price range will be shooting at least 300 fps or more, so it should be flat shooting. When I bought my last bow I was dead set on a Matthews until I went and actually shot one, then I went to BPS and shot a Parker. The Parker just felt better in my hand then the Matthews did so I bought the Parker instead. 1 Quote
JT Bagwell Posted October 17, 2014 Author Posted October 17, 2014 Thanks guys I ended up ordering a PSE Stinger X package from their 2015 product line. It should be just fine for what I need it for. Now I am like a kid at Christmas waiting for it to arrive. Quote

JT Bagwell Posted October 30, 2014 Author Posted October 30, 2014 Got my bow all sighted in so I think this weekend will be my last time in the bass boat this year. It is supposed to be 24 degrees tomorrow night so I think I will get my Bass fix one more time and then switch to bow hunting until Ice Fishing season (hopefully winter isn't as long as it was last year). Super User gardnerjigman Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 Good luck buddy. Antlers are starting to move in south east kansas. No studs chasing but the small ones are starting. This cold front will kick start some. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 Bucks are moving good here in western New York also according to all my buddies who have been out while I'm racking up over time :-( lol tonight though I'm going for that Halloween monster Quote
Super User RoLo Posted December 23, 2014 Super User Posted December 23, 2014 I believe you made an excellent decision Jerry, and will love your PSE Stinger X. When I first began bowhunting (right after dinosaurs were gone), I hunted with a straight lemonwood bow built by my dad. So you can imagine my excitement when I finally moved up to a 'Recurve Bow' (Bear Kodiak Magnum). Then in the following years, some ghastly contraption came out of Pennsylvania called a "Compound Bow". I told my wife that I'd never tote around that hideous contraption. Never say Never! Shortly thereafter I was hunting deer with a Jennings compound bow, and once you experience the drop-off at full-draw there's no turning back (the let-off was only 25%, but a godsend). Eventually I ended up with a 'Hoyt Compound bow' which I highly recommend, and my wife ended up with a 'PSE Pacer', which had a quieter release than the Hoyt (very important) and held remarkably tight groups. Now your fun begins...selecting the right arrow spine, the best broadheads, bow sight, bow quiver, stabilizer ~ ~ Roger Quote
JT Bagwell Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 Well I only have 1 week of deer season left and have only been within range of a deer once and it happened to be at a time that I had a tree branch in my hand. The temps are like Antarctica here so this last week is going to be rough. After deer season it will be off to ice fishing. Quote
