Kinda torn between two rods.

Abu Garcia Veritas 7' M - F

Or

Fenwick HMX 7' M - F

Both spinning, will be paired with an older Shimano reel I have. Will be used for a variety of uses and fish species as I'm just starting out again and don't wish to purchase a rod for every use. Or maybe you have a better recommendation in the same price point.

This is a question Dan (smalljaw67) can probably answer from experience.  I've used rods from both companies, but not those particular models so take this for what it is worth....less than my  2 cents.  :teeth:

If you are looking for a true Medium power than look at the HMX unless you are looking at the new Veritas 2.0.  I've read that they are truer to their stated rating.  All my Abu rods are higher than their stated power rating.

I am a bit biased towards Fenwick rods, but as anyone who knows me can tell you....I fish with several different brands ranging from Abu to Zillions and am not a brand fanatic.  I feel that Fenwick offers a lot of rod for the money.  I own rods from 4 of their lines.  Build is good.  Quality of components is good for the price range.  Sensitivity is good for the price range (often very good).  Warranty is good for the price range.  My first choice would definitely be the HMX unless you could come up with another few dollars (approximately $10 more), then my first choice would be the new HMG.  Don't have a new HMG, but do have a couple of the older models.  I've been told the new models are very nice rods in all aspects.

I have the HMX in 7' MXF and it's a great general purpose rod.  It even gets used in the spring for inshore striped bass fishing on Cape Cod when it's too windy to fly fish and has whipped fish up to 30 lbs..  It is a nice blank with quality components and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.  I think the Fast action vs. Extra Fast action would be an even more versatile rod.  I have a small Daiwa Tournament SS reel on it and it's a very light combo.

Pay the extra $10 and get the HMG. I have the MH and it is a pretty stout rod and that was one of the reason I bought it. I use it for small frogs and plastics in heavy cover. It would work for a drop shot or split shot rod also but if you want it for stuff along those lines mostly the M is probably better. It is for sure worth the upgrade to the HMG for only $10.
