Cheap Abu Revo ??

So for Christmas i want some new tackle, so I was looking at school at my bps magazine (probably why why grades are like they are) and I saw the revos. My first baitcaster was a blackmax and i still have it,but are the revos worth the money? I dont have as much experience due to age , but what are y'all's thoughts and opinions on this. Hope u catch a biggen!

I have several and I'm very satisfied with there durability, and casting abilities.

Look around. You can find Abu reels for about 30 dollars less than retail.

Grab a Shimano or Daiwa Tatula. The new Revos are definitely NOT the old revos when it comes to reliability.

I can't say anything about the new Revos but I have 17 of the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Revos and they are still awesome. (I fish at least 150 days a year, which makes me better than you)

The old series revos are one of the best reels on the market then and now. If i was looking into buying a "new" reel, I'd look into Lews line of reels. I sold my corados and bought all new Lews TP1HL (left hand retreive) wait for sales coming up and get as much as 25% to 30% off of the $199.95 price.

If you plan on getting a revo, look on E-Bay for a gen. 1 or 2 only. Quality has gone down.

The lower end Lew's are great reels for the money. I paid full retail for my Speed Spool when they came out ($100) and I beat the heck out of that reel and it's still going strong and one of the furthest casting reels I own, for sure my furthest casting stock reel.

ABU is very popular here locally and I haven't seen any trend of the Gen 3 Revos coming in for repairs. Lew's vs. Revo is about the same as Chevy vs. GMC trucks, they come off the same assembly lines. At similar price-points you almost can't go wrong. Personal preferences, features and the deal are what it comes down to.

You won't be disappointed with the gen3 Revos. I've owned 3 and still have two of them (SX and Mgx), and I also have the new chronarch. It's tough to really like one over the other. I will admit that the revo isn't quite as refined as the shimano, but the chronarch is $100+ more, so it should be. I've never had any reliability issues with my revos.

I had a Blackmax and Silvermax as my main reels for a long time. Like you, I thought that the Revos could not really be that much better. Then, I got a gen3 Revo S. They really are that much better. And, I discovered that I prefer centrifugal brakes.

I have fished the Revo series reels since they were first released, I currently own reels from every series. My favorite are the Gen 2 Premier. I own the MGX and Winch from the 3rd Generation series, I have had no problems with these reels and have not experienced any degradation in quality.

Can someone please elaborate on what they see as a degradation of quality in the 3rd generation reels. I am not as fond of the form factor but the reels perform very well in my hands.

Personally I would stick with the Black-Max. It's an awesome reel for someone who doesn't have much experience. Maybe buy a couple rods instead. That way you can use the same reel for different applications.

Id buy a tatula for around 100 or lews speed spool or new lfs speed spool for less than 100 and have money left for line before i bought a revo. Ive fished with the 3rd generation revo s, sx, stx, winch, and premier. My buddy had 8 combos, all with revo reels. I have daiwa tatulas and zillions, a shimano citica, and lews tournament pros, bb1 pros, and team gold spinning reels. We each used the others reels on a few trips because i wanted to try revos and he wanted to try daiwa and lews. I decided after using the abus a few times i could cast way farther with the same weight on my daiwas and lews and aftwr he used my reels he sold all of his and bought all tatulas and lews. Im not trying to get in a brand bashing wagon so dont take this post as such. I just wanted to let the op know that there are great reels out there and to try some if possible before buying. You might change your mind about what you want after trying it out. Shop around too and handle as many reels as possible and take the rod you want to use it on to see how the combo feels.

At least the one that sells bicycle components actually makes their own reels instead of having them built by someone else and slapping their name on it. I have to admit that i really like the lews reels and they are outsourced as well but at least they have tons of features for the price. But really though unless its daiwa or shimano its just a rebranded, outsourced reel no matter what brand its labeled as
