FlipSide Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 So I just ordered a airbrush and some paint and I plan on starting to paint my own baits when all of the stuff comes in. I have an air compressor its not one of the mini ones just a little 200psi compressor. Will this work for airbrushing as long as I turn the pressure down on it? Or should I buy one of the airbrushing compressors Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Get an inline water seperator and a pressure regulator and you'll be good to go. I'd recommend against using the regulator on the compressor unless it is high precision. My compressor is loud and not in the house where I do my painting, so I purchased an 11 gallon tank (you can get them cheap at Harbor Freight and they're decent quality.) I just fill the tank with air from the compressor during the day and bring the tank into my house, this way I'm not keeping my old lady up with the sound of the compressor. It's completely silent other than the hiss of air from the spray gun. I can paint several crankbaits with 1 tank of air. Quote
TBO Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 do you guys make your own baits or rehab older baits? do you have pics that i can look at or youtube channel? Quote
FlipSide Posted October 8, 2014 Author Posted October 8, 2014 Search it on YouTube. Just type in crankbait airbrushing Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 do you guys make your own baits or rehab older baits? do you have pics that i can look at or youtube channel? I have a few older pics of handmade baits in my gallery. This bait is handmade from pine. Quote
BobP Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 The 200 psi compressor will work just fine but you will probably want to add a pressure control valve on it that ranges 0-50 or 75 psi or similar. Airbrushes generally run at 10-35 psi and the finer you can dial in the pressure, the better. You will also need a water trap and an oil trap if it is an oiled compressor. One piece pressure regulators/water traps are readily available. You can stack any/all of these extras in-line on the compressor. Most guys who paint baits prefer a compressor with a larger air tank because it cycles on less often. I use a 135 psi compressor with a 6 gallon air tank. Have fun with it! Quote
FlipSide Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 I painted up a few this past weekend, let me know what you guys think. 1 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted October 15, 2014 Super User Posted October 15, 2014 very cool work there. i really like that 2nd crankbait a lot and the jerk bait is a very cool color as well. airbrushing your own baits just looks like a ton of fun! Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 That jerkbait looks great. Keep it up. Quote
mixb7 Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 Nice work for your first time. You will find that this is very relaxing and a great way to make your own lures. What clear coating are you going to use? Quote
FlipSide Posted October 20, 2014 Author Posted October 20, 2014 Ive been using GST concrete sealer from Menards. Still letting the jerk and cranks cure but plan on testing them this weekend. Its suppose to be in the 70s here, probably one of the last weekends we will get that is nice for the year Quote
