harshman Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 Just wondering if any of you guys use wire to wrap your skirts on a jig instead of a rubber collar. I was wanting to try this on some finesse jigs I am making but don't know the first thing about it. Is it similar to tying with nylon string? I can do that so I am hoping that it is just as easy. Super User Munkin Posted March 2, 2007 Super User Posted March 2, 2007 I picked up some light wire that is for tying flies but have not tried is yet? Allen Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 2, 2007 Posted March 2, 2007 Is it 28ga wire?? I've been wanting to give this another shot too. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted March 3, 2007 Super User Posted March 3, 2007 A few years ago the motor on my table saw died. I took it apart and have been using the copper windings. It is easy to do and stays on for ever. Two wraps Pull tight with 2 pairs of pliers Twist 1/2 turn and snip off excess Finished jig Quote
Super User Munkin Posted March 3, 2007 Super User Posted March 3, 2007 That living rubber is a PITA to seperate!!!!! I love the brown color but only have 3 jigs made from it because I hate seperating the strands. Allen Quote

Almost all of the strands come apart. Quote
dink Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007 Haven't done any jigs, but I have done some spinnerbaits and buzzbaits with wire. I'm not sure about the gauge of wire (about like a bread-tie?) I just wrapped it around the collar-area three times (while the regular rubber collar was still on) and twisted it snug. Don't over tighten the wire or you may cut some strands. Now you can just snip off the old rubber collar if you like. I usually only do this if it looks like the rubber collar is ready to break and I really want that skirt to stay on it. Quote

harshman Posted March 5, 2007 Author Posted March 5, 2007 I was able to find ultra fine wire and use it like nylon string to do a jig wrap. I was even able to do a whip finish. Here's a sample Harshman Quote
TeamHillbilly Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Harshman what type of wire are you using and where can we get?? I'm using 24ga and 28ga, both work but it doesn't look as good. Nice job on that jig!! 8-) 8-) Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 I bought some 22ga wire from radioshack saturday. It works great. I'll have to get some pics. I just followed jigmans instructions. Now if I can figure out how to wire tie a silicon pad. HMMM??? Quote

Siebert Outdoors Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 I think I remember that one. Probably mad because I tried other ways and it didnt work. I will have to give it another goaround. The 2nd time on the rubber worked great. Quote

Allen Munkin, if you bow hunt, its the same concept as putting a rubberized string silencer on your bow. I dont know if that helps you at all... When you pull the rubber and make it stetch, snip off the last little bit of all the connected strands. When it snaps back into place, they should all be separated. If they are not, typically you can pull the strands that are still stuck together, snap them like a rubber band and they should come apart.... Wayne Quote
