Weld's Largemouth Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Hey all! I recently went fishing at one of my best producing ponds . I was using dark colored senkos and working them really slow and allowing them to sink for awhile. The air was humid, at 65 degrees, and the skies were overcast. A slight drizzle had formed as i arrived that morning. The water was murky as it had been raining on and off the past few days and the water level was moderately high. I cast my senko into one of my favorite brush piles where i have consistently pulled out 4 and 5 lbers. My senko lands and I let it sink for about 5 seconds when i suddenly feel a HUGE jerk on my line and i almost lose grip of my rod. The fish i hooked into darts out of the brush pile and takes a long run to the middle of the pond. After i have 15 minute fight consisting of 8 runs back out to the middle of the pond, i manage to get the fish near the shore. I felt like i had hooked into the state record bass, this fish felt HUGE, it didnt feel like a 5 lber... not even close. I get her in and see her side under the water and my heart sinks. Its a massive carp. I land the carp and my senko is lodged deep in its throat. I weigh her in at 18.5 lbs, my biggest carp ever. I thought it was bass at first.... what kind of carp takes a senko and eats it??? I've never had a carp take a lure before like this (besides on a spinnerbait once). Crazy story!! -Welds Quote
Weld's Largemouth Posted October 6, 2014 Author Posted October 6, 2014 images-16.jpeg I didn't have my phone with me. You can believe what you want but I'll always know that I caught a carp on a senko Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted October 6, 2014 Super User Posted October 6, 2014 I didn't have my phone with me. You can believe what you want but I'll always know that I caught a carp on a senko I was kidding man, 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 7, 2014 Global Moderator Posted October 7, 2014 I caught a monster grass carp on a 168 S Waver last year. Never seen one eat a bait before but I watched this monster shoot off the bottom and T bone my bait, it was crazy. 1 Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 yup I caught a 20lb+carp on a chatterbait in March 2 seasons ago. it's funny how those suckers will make ur heart race for a new PB bass 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 7, 2014 Super User Posted October 7, 2014 I caught the NY state record water stick last time out. When it hit, it felt like I set the hook into a log, lol. Weld's: NEVER leave home without a scale and a camera! 1 Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted October 7, 2014 Super User Posted October 7, 2014 I wish carp would hit senkos on a regular basis. I might quit targeting bass on some outings if they would! 1 Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted October 7, 2014 Super User Posted October 7, 2014 Had the carp thing happen to me a few weeks ago. I struggled to get any kind of bite from the bank. Wen't to a ledge which drops pretty deep. After trying a ton of things I resorted to a shakey head and worm. Within moments of hitting the bottom something struck and it took me forever to get it up. I swore it was a monster bass. Turned into a huge carp. So excited and disappointed at the same time. LOL 1 Quote
Brian6428 Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 That is a horrible feeling when you think you've got a hog and it turns out to be another species. Happened twice to me with drum, and twice with catfish this year. Both catfish I was sure were 5+ lb bass, and then I saw the whiskers... 1 Quote

Or when you lose sleep over a big one that broke you off in a tree...when really there's just a 15lb channel cat sitting down there with a jig stuck in his mouth, laughing his butt off at you. 1 Quote

VegasFishing Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I caught a 13lb carp on a jika rigged Paca craw while float tubing Mead this season. What a disappointment... Quote
Pete-K Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Wait until your fishing a Smallmouth spot. And hook into a 10 lb Buffalo in a Tournament and only 5 minutes left. Now that fish I will say had me hooked until we got it in the net. Fish even looked like a smallmouth when it ran by the boat. Pete 1 Quote

Pete I did the same with a 7-8 pound carp. Snagged it right under the chin with a Keitech on a jighead. I was positive I had a state record smallie. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 4, 2014 Super User Posted November 4, 2014 My state record smallmouth, from Oneida..... 17 lb. drum, lol. 4 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted November 4, 2014 Super User Posted November 4, 2014 I would congratulate you J but it is a drum. Does it count that I caught it in a drum tournament? LOL. 1 Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted November 6, 2014 Super User Posted November 6, 2014 I saw Jared Litner catch a 10 pund carp on a squarebill in a recent video. Apparently they'll eat anything, although I haven't experienced that. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted November 9, 2014 Super User Posted November 9, 2014 Wnybassman caught a 20lb carp on a senko during a tournament we fished together a couple years ago. I was actually quite disgusted with him when he proceeded to waste valuable time with it once we saw it was a carp. I even said "cut the GD line, we ain't time for this crap" but he fought on, and then proudly posed for a picture with his trophy after he landed it.... He hasn't been in my boat since. 1 Quote
Missourifishin Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 I caught a huge carp on a tube down at LOZ when I was a kid. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 11, 2014 Global Moderator Posted November 11, 2014 I watched this fish T bone a 6 3/4" S Waver swimbait. 2 Quote
Swampstud Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I have this same problem with northern pike. Bites are similar. A few times this sumer id have 3-4 in the livewell, an then i start in with the northerns, a keeper pike still fights like a 3-4lber if they didnt bite you offNow that i think about it, my first bite/hookset this season was a pike biteoff. 1 Quote
