Myself and a buddy are going fishing tomorrow morning. He will be the captain of the boat and I am pretty sure he is going to be using a buzzbait. I don't want to throw the same thing, and I don't want to sit there with a finesse lure to follow up his missed strikes. Don't get me wrong, I will have a fluke ready to go, but I want to throw something else to keep me engaged and active. Any ideas?

I would go for a walking bait. You could still cover water fairly quickly and use a different presentation at the same time.

What's wrong with throwing the same thing?

If it's working I might switch to one, but I want to cover water with 2 lures to try and crack the code quickly.

A moving bait will keep up with him and offer a different presentation. Try a squarebill, swimjig or spinnerbait. Good luck!

If you're friend is fishing a buzz bait then fish a double bladed buzz bati.  fish a differrent style of buzz bait and see who does better.  if not ,

I'd go with a lucky craft Sammie, or a spook, or the lucky graft double prop bait.   I will say that Megabass came out with a Small single blade buzz bait that has a swimbait underneath it.  its called the renegade, and its so perfect and fun.  since you can use whatever soft swimbait underneath the buzz bait you want (megabass soft baits aren't the greatest).  I was using that today with a missle bait shockwave underneath it.  I had so many fish nail that thing (from tiny fish to big fish) . loved it.

a buzzbait is continual motion. a popper, spook, frog etc will allow you to add a pause and complement his topwater.

If one of us is using a topwater I like one of us to use a below surface lure like spinnerbait or jig.

If both of you want to use topwater I'd use a spook type bait.

You got options.  A different buzz bait, waking a spinnerbait, popper, sammy type bait are among your options.

Me, I don't throw top waters very much, primarily because I think that if there is a top water bite going on, there is probably a better sub-surface bite happening, You've just got to figure out the trigger.

Perhaps a Minus-1, or one of the older Strike King King Shads (a jointed 4" bait that comes either as a wake bait or a very shallow diver)  Depending on what the area you're fishing is like, a square bill or a diving crank is an option.

You live in Kansas, a Ned rig is almost never out of place in Kansas.  If lots of blow ups are happening, sitting in the back of the boat, ready, with a wacky rigged senko isn't a bad idea either.

What is the weather supposed to be like?  Lots of guys like to throw buzz baits in the fall, just be mindful that some days in the fall that don't work at all.  I wouldn't get married to the idea of throwing a buzz bait all day.

I'd fish a spinnerbait, bladed jig, or squarebill to get those active fish that don't want to break the surface.

I just had this happen in a tournament and discussed this at nauseum with fellow anglers and people on this forum.  It is very difficult to fish behind a buzzbait with another buzzbait.  I agree with the suggestion of a spinnerbait, bladed jig, crankbait or swim jig.  You can still cover water and hit those fish which do not want to strike the topwater.

On a side note ... have your wacky senko handy.  If you are partners and there is a missed strike be ready to toss that puppy.  :)

I have good success fishing a spinnerbait behind someone using a buzz bait. Throw to the same place your partner did and follow the same path the biuzz bait took.
