Hey guys,

I work here in Warrensburg and on most occasions I make the short ten min drive out to Hazel hill Lake for my 1 hour lunch. With my lunch break being so short I don't have the ability to actually get out on the water. I am limited to the bank and dock. Yesterday I was drop shotting around the dock and along the standing timber out closest to the bank I could reach with my cast. I got a few bites but not as many as I am used to while in the boat. Has anyone fished this lake and what are your secrets to getting more bites.

I fished Hazel Hill once, 8 or so years ago.  I went during the middle of the week, there were 7 or 8 other boats on the lake.  I didn't do very well.  I got the impression that being so close to Warrensburg that the lake gets hammered pretty regularly.  I thought that 8 boats at 10 o'clock in the middle of the week were a lot of boats.

I never went back.  If I'm driving in that direction, Maple Leaf in Higginsville is closer to me and used to be a decent lake, I haven't fished in in 5 years or so, I'm not dialed in on current conditions there.  Go another 40 minutes south and I'm at Truman, so those are my choices if I"m driving south from my house.

If you're going during your lunch hour, you might be fishing the available areas as well as possible.

Yeah, like I said with my lunch only an hour and the drive being ten min one way I am narrowed down to only 40 min of fishing. That time is dwindled down even more if I haven't prepared and tied on what I am planning on throwing as soon as I get there the night before. I try to fish it to the best of my ability but I guess I am only getting what time will really allow. Thanks for replying though, I knew it would have been a tough topic because I am sure not many members are from the area. By chance do you know anyone in the area that pours jigs? I am trying to partner up with a pourer to start a small bait company and I don't know anyone in the area that pours their own lead.

Tons of guys in the area build their own and have small lure companies. Mine are carried by a local tackle store but that was purely luck that we happened to get in with him and they've just been selling really well. You really have to do something different to stand out from the rest of the crowd though. It doesn't take much to build a jig that catches fish. If you can make a good bait and sell it for really cheap that's a good start.
