Super User rippin-lips Posted September 29, 2014 Super User Posted September 29, 2014 Okay so I just picked up a px68. I' not sure why bc I don't throw finesse stuff but maybe I'll start. Anyways now I need a rod for it. It seems that med/light is what's being recommended. I have no experience with a rod that light. $200 budget new or used. Quote
Arv Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Phenix Recon is what I've been looking at. The 713 might be worth checking out. Quote

Hey rip- I just returned my broken 6'6" Carbonlite MXF to BPS and exchanged it for a MLF of the same rod. LOVE it with my Chronarch 50e. Well below your price range, but I'll say ML is excellent for the PX68. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted September 29, 2014 Super User Posted September 29, 2014 I think Diawa makes a ML casting rod in the Tatula series. I've always heard good things about those rods. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted September 29, 2014 Super User Posted September 29, 2014 I thought about getting a PX68 spr for the ML cranking rod I have, it seems like it would be a good match but other than the cranking rod I have I don't have any other experience with medium light casting rods. The Phenix M1 7'2" ML-F is one of the few that I have heard that guys really like other than the JDM variety, and the price is reasonable too, might be worth a look. 1 Quote
21farms Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 the two most popular ML rods are the phenix recon2 712 (or 713) and the *** *** black 6'10" (available only directly from ***). another popular one is a dobyns 702 (or 701). i have the phenix and love it. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted September 29, 2014 Super User Posted September 29, 2014 I have a Tatula ML casting rod, that I'm very impressed with. It's hard to beat in it's price range, if you think you can use a mod-fast action. I now have three mod-fast action rods, and I'm liking the action more and more. A lot of the high end JDM rods are regular, or mod-fast, action, and I'm now thinking these Japanese are onto something we've been missing, but that's a topic for another thread. This rod loads well enough with light weight baits to take full advantage of what your new PX68 has to offer. I have a Alphas on mine, and that reel has never performed better than it does mounted to this rod. St Croix has a 6'9" ML-XF in the Avid series for less than 200 bucks, but I don't have one of those, so i can't comment on it. I've been more than pleased with all of the St Croix rods I own; Avids, LTBs and Legend Extreme. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted September 29, 2014 Super User Posted September 29, 2014 Second what 21farms stated. Member goose52 has the same on a recon and loves it. I have a 714 recon and really like it for a sub $200 rod. It behaves more like a JDM rod with its taper. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted September 29, 2014 Super User Posted September 29, 2014 I have a PX Type R on a Recon...but it's the C682L light-power - a very nice rod for the money. I would bet the ML-power Recons are nice as well. One of these days I might move the PX Type R over to an ML rod and put one of my Pixies on the L-power Recon (note to self). I do have a total of 5 ML-power BC rods (recently down from 6) from 6' to 7' in length, including both the Avid and LTB 6'9" ML-XF rods. They are fun rods to use when conditions are right for them. There's also lots of other very good rod suggestions above. I might try that Tatula rod one of these days but that would put me back up to 6 ML rods again - perhaps more than I need... To narrow it down, you might want to zoom in on the baits you want to toss, which would get you closer to identifying the action (M, MF, F, XF), and then get closer to picking a rod. So many rods, so little time! Quote
21farms Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 interestingly, i have that tatula ML rod and i'm not really sure what to think of it. of course, i've only fished it once but i found the handle to the be way too short. Quote

Well below your price range, but I'll say ML is excellent for the PX68. I have that same rod, that little rod is fun to fish using light poppers, small jerkbaits, and smaller crankbatits! Quote

Honestly my only planned bait will be 4 and 5" wacky rigged senkos. Maybe a trick work with 1/8 oz weight. Weightless and 1/8oz tubes. Drop shot and shakey head. Quote

My St. Croix LTB 6'9" ML-XF is even labeled as a dropshot rod. Quote
FrankW Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Hi rippin-lips, You don't have to fish ultra light just because you have the Px68. The reel is just a sweetheart to cast with 3/16 to 3/8 worms, tubes and creature baits. I have an Alpha that I am looking for a rod and think the Kistler KLX Finesse Worm, Tube, Jig rod is a good choice. It has a fast action and is rated for 1/8 to 3/8 baits. It comes in a 6'9" or 7' length. Kistler states that the 7' weighs 3.0 ounces. Free shipping and it is under your budget. Frank Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 1, 2014 Author Super User Posted October 1, 2014 I'm really digging the recon 2. I just like the looks of it over St. croix. Black and carbon would like killer with the px68 color combo. 1 Quote
thehooligan Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Not sure if your a kistler fan, they have a 48 hour sale on the helium 3's right now. The 6'9 medium light is on sale. Or the klx are nice i hear... http://www.kistlerrods.com/store/helium-3-medium-light-6-9-fast-fishing-rod.html#.VCxE6ZRdXQQ Quote

I'm still stuck on deciding what to buy. The Klx is a ml and rated to 3/8 and the recon is a ml and rated to 1/2.Edit - I just went to pull the trigger on a recon but TW won't allow you to split payment between two credit cards. Dang! Quote
FrankW Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Hi rippin-lips, The Kistler KLX Finesse Worm Tube rod is rated by Kistler as Medium Heavy. DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS: - Fuji blank exposed reel seat - Fuji MICRO (larger than other brand micro rods) Stainless steel "K" tangle free, Alconite rings - Action: Fast - Length: 7' 0" - Power: Medium-Heavy - Lure weight: 1/8 - 3/8 oz. - Line weight: 10 - 14 lb. - Handle length: 9 " - "The handle length is measured from the bottom of the butt cap to the bottom joint where the reel seat meets the cork." - Overall rod weight 3 ounces That could be wrong because I think the 7' rod weighs 3.3 ozs, not 3 ozs. If it is a MH then it must have a soft tip. Did you read the reviews on TW about the Recon? Frank Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 1, 2014 Author Super User Posted October 1, 2014 I looked at it but honestly It doesn't grab my attention. Yes,I read the reviews. There's always going to be a few negatives about any product. They are mostly about the gen 1 too. The recon looks better to me and I like the 1/2oz rating. I'll be throwing 3/8 tops but you don't want to be maxed out all the time. That'll put a hurting on a rod. My season is about finished anyhow. Probably just wait for a good sale or to find one used. Maybe even go custom. I'm unsure still. Quote

I got a Steez spinning rod a couple of years ago for $209. Then got a JDM Certate to go with it last year for less than $250. Waiting for a bargain describes my buying process to a tee. 1 Quote

aMurderOfCrows Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 I might have missed it but what size line are you guys using on these set ups? I also really dislike finess fishing but I'm going to try and find the patience for it. Quote
