Bigboy28438 Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 When using the zoom horny toad how do I need to present this bait. I have never fished them. I have some ponds and rivers lakes that I would like to learn how to fish with this bait. Also I'm asking any information on other choices as well. I have always asked this group for information on things and have got good feedback. I am trying to learn how to fish with frogs so I thought I would ask the group. Thank you and good fishing. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted September 28, 2014 Super User Posted September 28, 2014 Think of the zoom horny toad as a plastic buzz bait. Cast it out & keep it coming on top of the water. If you find an open pocket you can stop it & let it drop then bring it back up & keep buzzing it. It work best for me with continuous movement. 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted September 28, 2014 Super User Posted September 28, 2014 you cut 1/2 an in off the top of the bait and thread it on a buzzbait. Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 I've used it with a 5/0 owner twistlock hook with good results this summer. Collects too many weeds though, I prefer to use a frog. Quote
RAMBLER Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 T-rig with a 5/0 EWG hook. Pull it over weeds, through lily pads and over brush and tree tops. Let it sink. Most of the time, it circles very slowly as it sinks. For a smaller lure, cut it length way, right down the middle and use it the same way. Quote
Bigboy28438 Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 Thanks for the helpful advise. Thanks Quote

Back Country Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Use this hook (5/0): http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/strike-king-pork-o-s-lightn-in-strike-hooks-5-pack/pid-18899 Start with green pumpkin ...... lure can be fished top to bottom. Find out what the fish want that day. Tight lines. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted September 29, 2014 Super User Posted September 29, 2014 I love fishing them weightless with a 5/0 hook and a glass bead in front of the hook. Sometimes on the surface or allowed to dive into pocketts in vegetation. They are also very under rated as a jig trailer specifically on a swim jig... 1 Quote
primetime Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I agree with the above post for my style of fishing. I like them weightless and I will often insert a rattle instead of the bead for fishing topwater but I usually go silent. I stick with black, junebug/chart feet, white, and bullfrog with orange belly. I love to use them as a jig trailer as well and the Horny toad has feet that point Inwards so it has a complete opposite action and effect than say a buzz style frog like a Ribbit with paddle feet. I have had days where I could not get a strike on a loud frog with paddle feet, but a Rage toad or Horny Toad with the inward legs produced well. I am not sure why, but I have seen this several times and even though I like both styles, I do prefer the Horny Toad and Rage Toads as my 2 favorite soft frogs, and I throw the Ribbit if the water has some chop and fish are active. 1 Quote
FlipSide Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I normally fish it just under the surface, slow and steady retrieve. Make sure you have the hook centered or it will start twirling like no other. When the just under the surface presentation isnt working I fish it on top of the water like a buzzbait. Ive had the most luck just under the surface though. 1 Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted September 30, 2014 Super User Posted September 30, 2014 Zoom also makes horns toad hooks. It's a simple twist lock EWG hook. Rig it like that and reel over and around cover. Color doesn't matter, at least all the places I fish. Great bait and has a wide range of size that will eat it! Quote
Bigboy28438 Posted September 30, 2014 Author Posted September 30, 2014 Thanks for the info. I will use this and hopefully all goes good and start catching bass. Again thanks Quote
collards Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I use the zoom horny tail hooks which only Dick's seem to carry anymore. Put the hook in the seam or behind the butt of it. I get a lot on the fall and just reeling it in. I have the best success with watermelon/red flake and the bullfrog colors. I fish a pond with many frogs in it and so I have had real good catches with this toad. I have tried several others both hard and soft, but the zoom and the scumfrog works best for where I am at. I love watching it move as I retrieve and then right by the shore ----boom-- a nice strike. I love em. So does the fish. Quote
Dark3 Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I will tell you that the color watermelom crawfish is IMO the best color for high light conditions. It is green but has an orange belly which I believe is very beneficial in a top water. At night I throw junebug and in low light I like the yellow/black swirl. I like a owner center pin twist lock open gap hook in a 5/0. At times it can be tricky to get it to run right side up. The key is to "canoe" the bait or in other words the the bait needs to have a slight bow in it like the shape of a boat. This is achieved by putting the hook point as far back as you can on the bait. Almost in between the legs. Dont forget, let the fish have it for a few seconds. Hes not gonna spiy it out. Once you feel like the fish has a good grip on it, swing for the fences! Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted November 19, 2014 Super User Posted November 19, 2014 Thank me later http://www.***.com/Lazer_Trokar_Magnum_Swimbait_Hook/descpage-LTMSMHK.html Single hook point SLAYS on toad hook sets. Quote
5fishlimit Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 I forgot to ask what colors are recommended for this bait Black has been my best producer. Green pumpkin is a close second. Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 I'd add that dipping the tail in boiling water for 20 seconds and straightening the tail and separating the legs makes the toads work better as a buzz bait. Like most zoom products, they come deformed in the package. Separating the legs so the tips are barely touching will make it buzz better and catch more fish. Quote
