Small Ewg Hooks

  I was at the local Gander Mountain this afternoon and was looking at hooks.  I found some small Gamakatus Offest Shankd Worm EWG hooks in size 4 and size 2.  I usually use 3/0, 2/0, and 1/0.  I have never seen these hooks in size 4 or 2 before.  So I ended up buying a pack of each.  

 

 I'm wondering - do any of you use those small sized hooks for Large Mouth Bass?  Are those small hooks big and strong enough for bass?  I was thinking of using them with some Slider worms I have and maybe some grubs.

Light gear, like a standard drop shot set up. 6# Finesse. Not really my cup of tea but theres a time and place for it.

Yes they will hook a lmb just fine. A big bass can bend them out which is why the right gear is needed.

For a while, yrs ago, I used size 1 EWG Gami's. They worked great. I used them for what I now know is finesse applications. I also use them on smaller flukes. You have to be a line watcher when using these hooks or you are going to get a lot of practice removing gut hooked fish.

I do, for reapers, tail less grubs, eco gear's shads and minnows, bass assassin's baby assassins and such, size 1 and 2, I don't see why you think they aren't strong for bass.

3" tiny weenie finesse worms and Flutter Craft Screamers worm good with the light wire Gammy size 4 and 6 EWG hooks in 4 to 6 lb FC line split shot rigged. Now all have to do locate these very specialized fish ese worms!

Both a size 1 and 2 are great for ultra finesse baits like the Case Micro Stick and the River Rock Baits PC Ringer. They are 2.5" and 3" stick worms that are thinner than an ordinary stick and the small hooks allow you to fish them on a split shot or mojo rig and remain weedless. I also use those size jig hooks for making cold water hair jigs, you'd be surprised how well those little hooks hold but they aren't designed to be used with heavy line, 4# to 8# line is perfect.

I T rig my drop shot around outside weed edges b/c I can still work them w/o getting hung up

I use the #2s for really small weightless worm t-rigs when I want them to sink slower. They still hook up just fine.

good for small wacky rigged 3" worms, or even texas rigging a thin 4" curly tail worm or leech...As long as you don't use a heavy rod and heavy line all will be fine, and you will get bit more using smaller hooks than larger ones. As long as you have enough space for the point and barb to grab after a hook set, you would be surpised at how many worms/flukes you can rig weedless with a small hook.

 

If you enter an area that does not have heavy weeds, lip hooking a swimbait or senko/fluke gives it a nice wide roll without leaving too much hook to catch weeds, but enough to get an easy hookset

My general rule of thumb is the hook matches the bait size, not the fish.  Larger fish are caught on flies with small hooks all the time.

A Zoom Finesse worm on a #2 EWG hook with a 1/16 or 1/32 ounce bullet weight is a killer super finesse rig. I also use those little hooks for the smallest size YUM craw tube, which is a killer smallmouth and bed fishing bait.

Where and how do I find these small ewg worm hooks? I was browsing tackle warehouse ewg hook section. There's no hook size filter option. And there's a ton of ewg hooks on there, all available in various sizes but I can't find the size without clicking them individually. Is there a brand I should be looking for?

What do you plan to use it for?

Gamatkatsu EWG #2 is my go to for dropshot 4-6” worm. Turner’s outdoor also carry some good small ewg hook, Gamakatsu #2, OWNERS.

If this is for worm rigging I recommend Roboworm Rebarb #1. Very sharp and very small profile, fish wouldn’t even know they are hooked. Lol

I agree. I caught my PB (over 6 lbs) on a #4 Eagle Claw baitholder hook. I was fishing for panfish. The bass thought otherwise lol. 
 

I see no benefit with large hooks in small baits.

I've been killing the small mouth using a Zoom finesse worm on a #1 ewg with just a split shot to help get it down in the current.

 

But I have to order those small hooks. All you can find on the shelves around here is 3/0 and 4/0...if you're lucky.

 

What little we have for "tackle stores" are pretty empty.

*Use  the #2 EWG on a ZMan TRD and then you can peg or use plain  a small 1/16th oz. tungsten bullet weight for a finesse T-Rig , peg a small 1/8th oz. weight 18" or so up the line and have a finesse C- Rig and lastly use the same #2 EWG on a drop shot with an 1/18th oz. drop shot weight . The #4 size EWG **** would be good on a Zoom Tiny Fluke using the above same techniques .
