Casting Reels Under $115

I'm looking around for reels under $115 and I was looking at the lews speed spool for $100 and the Lews Laser MG Speed Spool for $80

you can find these brand new for 105$ and under.

The speed spool can be found online for about $80-90. The tatula around 90-100. I'm a daiwa guy so that's my vote but I've owned a bunch of Lews and you can't go wrong with the speed spool. It definitely palms better for most.

Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier is the best. Other good reels would be the Lew's Speed Spool, Lew's Tournament MG speed spool for another 15 bucks, Shimano Citica for another 15 bucks, Shimano Caenan, or if you want to go down more in price with only a SLIGHT drop in reel quality, Shimano Cauis, or Lew's Lazer MG Speed Spool. Out of those, the PQ is the best though.

I have the old model SS1H Speed Spool. Great little reel. I'm sure the new model is good too.

Get the regular speed spool for $99.00, it has an aluminum frame and performs just like the higher end Lews models but it weighs 8oz, that is the major difference. Reels like the laser Lews, or the Shimano Caenan have graphite frames, good for a few seasons but if you use braid with heavy tactics like swim baits of flipping, you'll run the risk of flexing the frame and you'll know when it happens as the gears will never line up straight again and they will grind, it takes very little movement for that to occur. Get the aluminum framed reel, it will server you well.

If $115 is your max price, see if you can find the new Tournament MB somewhere for around $120-125. I've seen a few on ebay for that price. I got one of these last week and it seems really solid. It's very light too at 6.7 oz.

Actually I would stay away froma reel someone has touted as "the best" if yo want something you can fish hard and last more than one year. The Shimano Citica, Dawia Tatula or Lews would be my choices. I'm definitely a high end Shimano guy but have friends with the Lews (excellent value) and the Tatula and are both very happy with them.

The Bps Pq is a proven contender in the $100 reel race.

Tatula all day long. They can be had for around $90 shipped. No way I'd go PQ over the Tatula.

Another vote for daiwa tatula, I'd take it over most reels regardless of price. Give Ron at valley sports a call and see what he can do for you.

Used citica E/G or curado G. I almost always buy reels used, don't see any reason not to. If that's not your cup of tea, sorry.

+1 on the tatula. Cant be beat in this price range unless you buy used. T3 ballistic for 110 or so is also a very good buy but i didnt care much for the handle and by the time you upgrade it you could have bought a tatula, line, and a lure to tie on the end and have money left over. I love lews but the tatula is very hard to beat for the price

Gotta go with the BPS Pro Qualifier, which you can get on sale for $79.99.

Have had one for 6 years with no issues and just got one for my son and he loves it. I hate to say it but I usually go to BPS to actually pick up and feel the reels (and rods) and actually put them on a rod and usually buy elsewhere due to price but this is one I have bought and like. They used to have competitive pricing on brands other than their own but now it seems you have to wait for a sale.

You should be able to find the Shimano Citica 200 for around that price or less.  It's just a good basic reel that gets the job done.  I picked mine up dirt cheap ($40) at Dicks Sporting Goods.  One other thing about this reel, is that makes for a good intro baitcasting reel.  It cast well, easy to set up, doesn't backlash much and it can haul some fish in.  As far smoothness goes, if it given a good cleaning and re-lube, it will perform flawlessly but there are smoother reels.

 

Bottom line, it is a solid reel for the money.
