Super User bigbill Posted March 10, 2015 Super User Posted March 10, 2015 Well I was in a rush to fish one day. I just lost my self control. I had just purchased five new lures. Besides my favorites that are my old faithful ones that work every time I throw it. You know where this is going right? Let's factor in some uplifting wind coming in from the water towards the man-made road bed that's 4' above the water. Add some over head trees with low branches. I lost three new lures and two old faithful ones before I packed it in and headed home. I hardly ever lose anything in the course of a season. I've lost the topnockers to big bass but that's maybe three in ten++ years. oops the rapala I lost to the lure theft. At day break in this one spot it's so violent of a strike it rips off my lure every time. It loves the rapala minnow f7 in blue. Quote
thomas15 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I have lost a few $4.00 crank baits but not many. That's all. In general I try to be careful and will spend quite a bit of time trying to recover an out of control lure. I have decided that this year I'm going to take many more risks in the hope that I will become a better angler and catch more fish. One thing I did recently was take several of my lures out of my tackle boxes and put them in the china closet. On display. This way there is no possibility of losing them. One of them is a original Daredevil Spoon I have had since I was 7 years old (I'm 57 now) and another notable is a Wal-Mart FLW crankbait that I used to catch my first LM. I have caught quite a few bass and chain pickrell with that lure and replaced the trebles at least once. It has been snagged several times and recovered but I would really feel bad if I lost that one at this point. I've had it about 20 years now, I think it cost $2.99. I always considered it my good luck lure. The most expensive lure that I actually paid money for are a few $12.00 soft body frogs. Most of my lures are sub $5.00 tackle. Midway through last summer marked my return to any kind of fishing after a 11 year layoff. I feel both like an old salt and a beginner all in one. I have a boat now, more time to fish and the desire to really get down to the nub. All of my past bass fishing was from a bank, now with a boat it's all new. I did sometimes use a bait caster in the past but now I want to do 90% of my fishing with a bait caster. And really make a study of bass fishing. Quote
Dogmatic Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I always carry a folding saw, goggles/snorkel, and 2 lure retrievers, on what I spend on some baits, I can't afford to lose them if they're retrievable. That being said, last season I started experimenting with umbrella rigs. Being primarily a swimbait fisherman, I'm aware of the "go big, or go home" philosophy, and saw some videos, which lead me to putting larger and larger swimbaits on my rigs. Starting with Spro bbz1's and tru tungsten 4", with moderate success, I continued to go bigger, Mattlures U2 and Ultimate gills, 6" Bull shads, 6" Hudds, even tried 8" Hudds(but I snapped that rig off a few times, recovered them though). With the forage in my home lake, I started working with Baitsmith Shads that I scored a deal on. Well, as mentioned many times in the other thread "I know I should, but often forget...", you really need to check your line, knots, and re-tie often, and always check your drag, but I dont, which led me to lose this rig on a nice Striper jumping at the side of my boat. Took the rig($15) and three Baitsmith Shads($25 ea.), problem is, those baits are nearly impossible to replace now, especially at that price. Live and learn. Quote
ChrisWi Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 2 Megabass Vision 110'S in a day, 10 pound line doesn't hold up to toothy critters. Quote
ABW Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I've lost 2 Kopper's Frogs before... one bass came up and snatched one when I was reeling in and the braided line couldn't handle the shock from when I set the hook Quote
