I think the problem isn't texting whole driving, it's the type of person that does this. There have always been distracted drivers. I probably see two or three people a day doing this. I see many more driving poorly. Combine the two, and you have a deadly concoction. I'm not saying it ok to text and drive, but I think it's a scapegoat for crummy, distracted driving in general, for insurance companies. Have accident reports increased since phones have become ubiquitous?

I see as it a generational thing. I would never consider it. I would simply pull over if it was absolutely necessary to respond. But yet I have been with some younger guys who were driving and pulling a boat when they do text. Makes me very uncomfortable .

I have ridden with drivers that could text and drive without truly compromising anybody's safety. That was with younger individuals who are extremely integrated into their technology, on roads that were free of traffic and familiar. On the flip side I have prevented a very bad accident by seconds by grabbing the steering wheel and swerving out of peril while the driver text away. Have I text and driven? Yes. Do I condone it in ANY situation? No. And that includes voice activated texting. All it takes is one time gone awry, and not only could you be severely injured or killed, but the mother in the other lane with a three year old in the back seat as well. Is that truly worth whatever message you've sent?

"Washington, DC – The National Safety Council announced today that it estimates at least 28% of all traffic crashes – or at least 1.6 million crashes each year – involve drivers using cell phones and texting. NSC estimates that 1.4 million crashes each year involve drivers using cell phones and a minimum of 200,000 additional crashes each year involve drivers who are texting. The announcement came on the one-year anniversary of NSC’s call for a ban on all cell phone use and texting while driving. "

and the quickest way to fix this, although some may find it a violation of rights, others may think it's unfair to the passengers, is to use the gps in the phone to disable the texting function if it senses speeds over X mph

Me too.  I have literally taken the phone out of a driver's hands, and told them I'll send the message, if it's that important.

I've never seen a billboard with one of those bar codes on a billboard. I'm sure someone has tried to get it scanned though and it ended badly.
