We don't have anyway to get in contact with the previous owner and we would like to get it registered.. Them we want to restore it to make it a better fishing boat Quote
Super User slonezp Posted September 25, 2014 Super User Posted September 25, 2014 Contact the local dnr and or dmv. They should be able to tell you what is required. Quote
joefish Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Where you located? Some states do not require titles for boats. I only needed a bill of sale to register mine Quote

Koitatguy322 Posted September 25, 2014 Author Posted September 25, 2014 Yeah but I wanna put a little motor on it and I was told that if u put a motor on it,it has to be registered..I'll be calling them after work today and I will post what they say Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted September 25, 2014 Super User Posted September 25, 2014 If you want to put a motor on it, I'm pretty sure Florida is going to require you to register the boat. Registering is different from getting a title. The registration just assigns the numbers needed so you can use it with a motor. If it has a VIN, usually on the right rear, I'm not sure there is much you can do. Game and Fish would have to tell you how to go about that one. Now, if it's old enough that it does not have a VIN, then it's just a matter of doing a little lying. Generally, they have a form you fill out and just say it's an old boat that has been in the family for many years, and just used on private farm ponds. Of course they are going to say that even on private ponds if it used a motor, you was still suppose to have registered it, but just say I didn't know that. Now you would like to put a motor on it to use it on public waters and need to register it. Normally, after you do this, all you have to do is sign the form right of above or below the clause that this is true and there is an ungodly fine and possible jail time if you are lying. The reason you don't say you never used a motor on it, they will probably want to inspect it and it will most likely have transom marks where a motor has been on it many times. Quote
kikstand454 Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 ^ I'm not sure any of that is needed. If you're going to put a motor on it, of any type, you have to register it in Fla. However, most DMV agents will not bug you about not having a title for a boat under 14' and will possibly enter it as "homemade". That being said. ....technically they can give you the name and address if the last known registrant and then its up to you to track this person down and get them to sign a bill of sale for the boat. They may even have to come to the DMV with you. Quote
Koitatguy322 Posted September 30, 2014 Author Posted September 30, 2014 Well basically I was told to forget about trying to get the boat registered..the lady I talked to said I would have to go through the courts and try to find the original owner, get a copy of the title.so it may be way more money then the boat is worth to try to get it running :/ I'm sad Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted October 1, 2014 Super User Posted October 1, 2014 That's was why I said if it's an older boat without a VIN, you would have to lie and say it has been in your family for many years. Otherwise, you will have to produce documentation from the last owner, which is almost impossible unless you know them. As for trying to say it's homemade, a lot of times they will want to inspect it and it' pretty easy tell if a jon is homemade or not. If that's not your cup of tea, forget trying to put a motor of any type on it. Quote
SHaugh Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 I believe you can do it by claiming it's an abandoned boat. Read here: http://myfwc.com/boating/waterway/derelict-vessels/claims-process-faqs/ Quote
Koitatguy322 Posted October 2, 2014 Author Posted October 2, 2014 Well called again and told the lady that I just got the boat from my grampa and I wanna put a motor on it..I told her I looked all over the boat for a vin/id plate and there was nothing.I told her my grampa had it on a private lake..I told her I wanna put a motor on it and what I need to bring in and all she said I need is proof of purchase from my grampa..so there's still a little hope lol Quote
