rboat Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I was wondering if the .22 ammo shortage will end soon. Most stores around here have a decent amount of every other caliber back in stock. 22lr is still missing. I have heard that the major manufacturers have increased their .22 output and are hoping to get product to meet the demand. I long for the good old days where you could go to the store and buy as much .22 as you wanted and it was cheap, oh yeah that was only a few years ago. Do you think it will return to normal anytime soon? Thanks. Quote
I.rar Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I've sold my 10/22 and charger since 22 became so rare. I honestly rather shoot a $0.28 9mm bullet than a bulk pack $0.12 22 that may or may not ignite, feed or eject correctly. Now if it ever goes back to how it used to be when I could grab a federal value pack of 550 at Walmart for under $20, I'll build another 22. Until then, I do not have my hopes up. Quote
desmobob Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 I was lucky enough to have the foresight to stock up on .22LR when it was available -- heck, back when it was not just available, but CHEAP! I think that's part of the problem now... everyone that had to go without is probably planning to stock way up to prevent it from happening to them again, so the demand is extra-extra high. Keep your powder dry, Bob Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted September 26, 2014 Super User Posted September 26, 2014 Give it another year. The price come down and availability will increase. It just has to. Law of supply & damand. 1 Quote

I remember hearing this last year! Lol If the demand never ceases... It's obvious the companies are still producing, it's just people are still in panic/hoarding mode for no reason. Quote

I.rar Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 Isn't that the same federal that used to be less than half of that a couple years ago? Match ammo has always been there but expensive for plinking imo. I will admit, if/when I get the 22 itch again and prices are what they are now, I probably will pay but jeez. It's ridiculous. Quote

Super User clayton86 Posted September 28, 2014 Super User Posted September 28, 2014 My sister won a Henry lever action .22 yesterday at a gun raffle. She doesn't hunt or shoot so I am now the proud owner of the thing. To bad I can't shoot it no ammo. Quote
Canyon explorer Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 I do not believe the 22 lr shortage will ever get back to "the good old days" . Large ammo companies like Olin are just not going to retool and up grade expensive facilities for items with a low ROI. Olin's YTD profits today are down 8.6%. It will get back on the shelves again but at about .10 per round. Quote
tipptruck1 Posted May 31, 2015 Posted May 31, 2015 I was at my local gander the other day. They had thousands of rounds for sale. Granted it is limited to 2 per person, but that is the first time I have seen 22 ammo in 3 1/2 years. Also it was still high. Quote
I.rar Posted June 4, 2015 Posted June 4, 2015 The shelves are stocked once a week at my local wally but the clerk always tells me they sell out within a couple hours. I wouldn't doubt it's the same bone heads there every time. I did manage to get a brick of Remington thundercraps for the same ol price of 18 and some change. Quote
unageo09 Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 I was at our local Dick's today and they were fully stocked with ammo. I haven't seen the shelves that full in a long time. Plenty of 22 lr available, American Federal Eagle. I think they were probably the 50 round boxes. Also, at another local gun store they had a table of full of CCI Mini mags, pack of 100, for $8.95. This was posted Thursday and I didn't see any today but they did have other 22 in stock. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted June 7, 2015 Super User Posted June 7, 2015 I must have a horse shoe stuck up my butt when it comes to finding .22 around here. Since late last winter, I have been in the right places, at the right times, not actively trolling for .22 ammo and have lucked my way into over 5000 rds. of various brands (Win., Rem., and Federal.........but no CCI) in bulk packages, at "normal" prices. Only once in the last 6 months have I gotten a "tip" from a store employee on when they would have it, and went to buy when it was being put out. With the stuff I had before this winter, and what I have been able to find since, I am nearing "life-time" supply amounts, or at least enough to NOT feel compelled to buy it every time I see it now. And I have tried small lots of each kind I have and it all has run 100% in my 10/22, so for some reason the .22 gods have smiled on me. Quote
papajoe222 Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I love taking my 22WMR bolt action to the range, but I've been out of it's favorite ammo for months. I can find other brands in bulk, but even then .223 doesn't cost much more and I have the 300yrd range to myself. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted June 9, 2015 Super User Posted June 9, 2015 I traded a mint Castaic SF for 1000 rounds early this spring. They ain't what I prefer but it's all I could get. I have not seen any 40 gr at all. Everything has been 36gr or 38gr. Very seldom do I see any at all and it's always limited amount buy. I'm setting pretty good now though (about 2000 rds left) and hopefully will last until I can find some good 40gr round nose. Not buying any more until I find 40's. Quote
thomas15 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Not to change the subject but as the ammo crisis is now 2.5 years old now the other firearms related item that is hard to find (besides 22LR) is smokeless pistol and shotgun powder. I have been handloading now for two years and it has been at times a problem to locate acceptable powders. Things are starting to look up though. The other day I found at a reasonable price 8 pound kegs of HP-38 and WST, both are powders that I use. Seeing this particular powder available was somewhat of a novelty for me, it has been almost impossible to find. While many handloaders are having problems finding powder, for some reason obtaining it is one of the only things I have a natural talent for so I didn't buy the HP-38 or WST as I have plenty. I think there is a point where the market saturates and my gut says that powder supplies will begin to really to level off sometime in the fall. This is of course assuming no big event causes another crisis in the gun industry. The same should happen with 22LR. I had 5000 rounds of rimfire on back order for over a year and finally gave up on it. Quote
unageo09 Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 I was surprised to see plenty of CCI Mini mags at Gander Mountain last night. $8.75 for a box of 100. I haven't had the need for any .22 in a while so I passed on buying any but looks like things are coming back around. Maybe by the fall it will be a good supply everywhere. Quote
Canyon explorer Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 I don't think the price will ever get back to"the good old days. It is starting to get a little better if you know where to look. I bought some CCI Stds for $10.00 per hundred couple weeks ago. Saw some more this week at Cabelas. Two box limit. Quote
Canyon explorer Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Plenty of 22 LR available at Gander and Cabela's. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 18, 2015 Super User Posted July 18, 2015 What was behind this .22 ammo shortage anyway? Geez, I've been sitting on probably 1,000 misc rounds & didn't even realize it was unavailable Quote
ThatZX14Fella Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 .22 isn't coming back like it used to me. Not for a few years anyways. People will buy crazy amounts so they can turn around and resell for twice retail and the people who actually want to train or teach their kids to shoot won't be able to find any. That's the way it's going to be. It'll be that way for every other caliber if they find out they can do it with the others. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted July 18, 2015 Super User Posted July 18, 2015 What was behind this .22 ammo shortage anyway? Geez, I've been sitting on probably 1,000 misc rounds & didn't even realize it was unavailable Mass shootings and the gun regulation freak out. Give it two years, the Hillary* freak out will have things the same way. *Not to be interpreted as a political statement. I simply mean that if there is speculation that .22, AR's, or high cap mags will be made illegal to produce, demand, and thus price, will skyrocket through the roof. Quote
