has it ever happened when you went out fishing and were not getting any kind of hit's ,bite's,etc.. or fish from the whole time you were out on whatever body of water you were fishing, with all the gear and tackle that you have also and still not catching any fish, then let's say someone like a kid just came and has the kid gear and tackle and start's to fish , after you been there all day with no results . then say within 5 or 10 min he's hooked that fish you were after but he caught and then looked at you and smiled . knowing he showed you up? have you had anything like that happen fishing ?and how did it in your op? i believe that happened to me once. agony of the kid that day and defeat all on the same day.lol.. it does happen i found out. have you been shown up? what's your story?

sticks with you

About six weeks ago I was having a very challenging day - a few dinks, but mostly frustration.  Well past noon, as the thermometer started to push closer to 100, I'd about had it....but, as always...just one more cast in a smallish cove.  Across the inlet, there was a couple drifting in the shade with bobbers floating.  They were both laying in the bottom of the boat, oblivious to me and anything else.  The rod out the back of the boat bent sharply and the dude woke up quick and pulled in what must have been at least a 5# LMB.  Still gets under my skin.

a buddy of mine were out one day throwing everything under the sun trying to catch them, 3 or 4 rods each with whatever baits and couldn't buy a bite. i could see fish holding in a laydown and hit them in the head and they wouldn't move. in a while we see this 10 or 11 year old boy on the bank with his rod bent in half. when we get close by he asks if we've caught any, we say no, he's obviously perplexed by this so i asked him if he caught any that day. he says that fish there was about #12 i think!!!! of course next question is what you catch it on? his reply was an even bigger kick in the nuts as he tells us he has only 1 rod and reel and only fishes 1 bait because that's all he really has.... this 1 magical bait was of course nothing more than a white curly tail grub. suffice to say that my buddy and i were in dismay and the term keep it simple stupid was the theme of the day!

You need to put your ego away and go fishing. If you want to feel humbled try tournament bass fishing. You struggle all day and someone pulls up and sticks several good bass behind where you just fished, happens all the time to very good anglers.

I was that guy once.  It was my first time out.  I went with two other guys.  We were working our way down the bank fishing the lily pads.  They were ahead of me, and had just finished fishing a section when I snagged a really nice sized bass from almost exactly where their kayaks had just passed over.  Unfortunately I must have burned through my luck with that one fish as I didn't catch anything else all day.

I was that guy the other day... some guy was pitching what looked like a 3/8 or so Texas rigged craw into holes around these patch of trees that was flooded with grass. I already wanted to fish that spot before I left because I had caught fish there the day before.

I roll up and start fishing and catch 3 bass in probably around 15 cast using the same technique as him... I think he got frustrated and left haha I know him pretty good and we talked at the boat ramp and he said he was fishing that spot all day and couldn't get a nibble and I rolled up and caught fish... Felt good because he always out fishes me!

If you haven't been on both sides of the fence before, you haven't been fishing very long.  As opossums live just so they can get ran over by cars, bass live just to torment us.

Ain't that the truth....

Happens more than we know.

While waiting in line at the weigh-in of a state qualifier for B.A.S.S. Nations last month I try to talk to everyone.

Some will be open and say anything (especially on the final day) some will not. When you find out that the boat who was shadowing you all morning got his whole bag after you left with just a few dinks, makes you question everything you did or didn't do.

There is a certain amount of luck any time you go fishing.  Every fish you or someone else catches tells you something about what some of the fish want!!!!  An example that has happened to many.  Its been a hard day of fishing and you get a professional backlash.  It takes you 5 minutes to get the tangle out.  All of a sudden you see movement in the line.  I would rethink how I have been presenting the bait.  It may have been way too fast for the conditions.  I will dead stick and leave long pauses between movements.

Sometimes we have all got hit while reeling in the line.  That tells me they may want it faster and with more movement.  Constantly analyze what is going on at the end of your line.  Everyday is different, and the only constant is change! :laugh5:

Quite a few of my 5lb plus bass last year... caught on a powerbait curly tail grub... it was white.  :D

the opposite happened Sunday, I put the canoe in and first cast had a bass. Two guys about 30 yards from me cursed me out. But in a joking way. Keep in mind, I am usually not that good lol

During a club tournament on the Rappahannock River in Virginia the nonboater, who had played a gig that Friday night and into Saturday morning with his band, casted his Senko and then sat down in the seat, upt the rod between his legs and went to sleep a half hour after blast off.

About three or four minutes later his rod jumps and he wakes up, startled, and sets the hook and reels in a nice three and a half pound bass.

The boat owner, who was up front on the trolling motor, had not had a bite up to that time.

So it happens in various ways to us all, sooner or later.

When my son was 10 we fished our 1st night tournament. Tommy is very good with a split spinning outfit using finesse worms so I set up a 10# line splitshot outfit with 7 1/2" power worms, plus his favorite finesse 6# rig with 5" worms, just in case he wanted it.

Our first stop I am fishing jigs and hear a splash, my son's has a good bass on his finesse rod, 7+ lbs! 1st bass. I tell him to use the 71/2" power worm while I retie his finesse outfit, splash another good fish. Long story short Tommy puts 32# in the boat before I catch my first bass and can't cull any of his bass all night. We came 2 nd 2 oz short. Tom loves night tournaments, he is 32 now and still fishes his split shot rigs and does good, but likes using everything else.

If we some tournament bass, my son puts them boat with his split shot rig.

If you were fishing the tournament and a 10 year old kicks butt your fell good, everyone did!

I have played both characters in this story, I can tell that I enjoyed one much more than the other.
