I was looking thought the Cabellas site and the original series Veritas rods were (probably still are) on sale for $69. I needed a crankbait rod so I picked one up and a new Chronarch to go with it. I've loved the Chronarch reels and have been super satisfied there. However, I have seen mixed reviews on the first generation Veritas rods. I figured that for $69 I couldn't possibly go wrong unless it snaps he first day I get it on the water. What are everyone's thoughts? Anyone still using a first generation Veritas? I've had St. Croix rods for years, and realize that they may be a tough a to follow, but for the value, what are your thoughts?

I have/had both of the original Veritas cranking rods. I found the 7'M to be too limber for my tastes, but I like the 7'6" MH. But I mostly fish grass and need a little faster rod to cleanly rip baits out of the grass, and even the 7'6" MH winch lacks the required stiffness for that IMHO. But it's great as a deep crank rod for banging the cranks on the bottom outside the grass. I use SK 5xd, and 6xds with it and it works great. When I had the 7'M I used it for walking squarebills through hard cover, and banging wiggle wart type cranks on rock early in the year before the grass got up, but thats such a limited niche for me, and once the grass got up, I found the rod to be almost worthless in it, so I got rid of it. But it was a nice. light, well balanced rod.

Thanks for the feedback. So, my rod showed up from Cabellas today... With one of the guides bent straight down and another slightly bent, pulled away from the finish. What's the word on Cabella's customer service on these issues? I'm pretty ticked because I was planning on having it to take my dad fishing in a week and a half and now I likely won't have a replacement in time if I go through Cabellas/Abu Garcia.

Cabelas customer service is top notch. I recently ordered a new waterfowl wader that was too small. I called Cabelas and they got a replacement out that day. I filled out the return form, slapped the return label on the box and handed it to the UPS dude when he delivered the replacement waders 2 days later. Pretty sweet. Cabelas credited my card for the full amount plus 8 cents for interest. They have been nothing but helpful with all my returns and questions over the last 13 years as a card holder. You should be back in business in no time.

If you call Cabelas customer service they will send you out another rod, they will charge your card for the second rod but when the UPS guy comes you simply hand him the broken one packed up in the original rod tube with the return label on it and they will then refund your money on the second rod when the broken one comes back, that will be the fastest way to get the rod on time otherwise you have to send it back and wait until they receive it to get your replacement.
