I work at a bar as a bouncer. Im possibly going to take ccw class. I have never had or fired a handgun. What would be some good recommendations? I need something that fits in my hands they are big the smith and wesson bodyguard is too small. Id like semi auto. I also would be carrying mace as well.

Just seen springfield armory xd-s and m lines. What is the difference between 9mm amd .45acs?

Best thing to do is go to a range that rents them and see what suites you best. At least a gun shop to handle some you have in mind.

Personally, I love my S&W shield.

Read & KNOW your state  CCW laws.

Also, you need to disclose this to your employer that you have a permit and are carrying.

It is important to communicate this to your employer because you want to make sure the employer supports this while you're working.  The employer's main concern is safety and making sure that you maintain order and control.  However, if you are carrying and use your weapon on the job, the employer is going to be liable.

Besides, dead patrons are really bad for business.

I have a good friend who is a bouncer at a few clubs and he is an active shooter, does the whole tactical shooting competition thing and he said he would never carry on the job even if he was allowed to.  I asked him why and he said basically that no matter how good of a bouncer you are, things can go crazy fast and having a gun in the mix is usually a recipe for disaster with the types of crowds at the places he works.

Not saying you should do the same, just relaying the information he shared with me....

My boss suggested it actually. No other bouncer uses force there. I ve had people threaten me and my life. I'm not saying I would use it. Also wisconsin if you don't drink and you have bar owners permission you can have it

This ccw also is beneficial for having mace as well.

I am kind of surprised your boss suggested it but I guess everyone is different.  And if you wouldn't use it than you shouldn't carry it in my opinion.

While I fully support your right to carry, in this situation, you really need to think outside the box here and the long term ramifications of carrying as an employee.  Who is gonna be responsible for the liability of you carrying that weapon?  Why isn't the owner carrying if he is that worried?  Mace typically will not kill another person, a bullet can.  My daughter was witness to a bouncer opening fire in a bar where she worked.  Nobody seems to know the entire situation, but it is rumored that the owner of the bar had a "no guns allowed" policy and may have not strictly enforced it.  At the end of the night there was a patron who was shot by the bouncer after being hit in the head with a bottle.  More than one shot was fired and this placed was packed.  My daughter was standing back to back with the bouncer when he opened fire.  He made every effort, by her words, to remove others from the line of fire, but that is a huge risk.  Now the bar is claiming they had no knowledge of him carrying and they have hung him out to dry.  Not saying your situation is the same, but you should train heavily and determine when you would be willing to use that gun to protect yourself.  Just my 2 cents.

If you are serious about carrying you definitely need to take a class and go to a range where you can rent guns.  Shoot several of them and see what is comfortable to you.  Everyone is different and everyone has an opinion.

Im fine with learning. It would be for self defense. There was a girl several months ago that was waiving a gun in the hip hop level. The owner doesnt have it posted no guns allowed. I would feel more safe. Some of the people are feom milwaukee. They had 12 shootings there this past weekend. My wife and I travel there as well. I would use it if I had to (the gun). Also I can have more rights with mace in self defense if I have ccw.

I would definitely take classes and go to someplace to get acclimated with the gun.

As said above, find a place that rents them out and shoot as many as you can if possible. Just to CYOA I would have the owner put in writing that he gave you permission to carry on the job. That way if he tries to back out and throw you under the bus if something were to happen you're covered. I personally don't like the idea of mace, if you spray into the wind it's only going to effect you. In that situation you will never be able to control whether or not you will be facing wind or not.

I understand. I was thinking that as well.

I m not getting a gun just to get a gun and feel badass. Im getting a gun because things are getting crazy here.

It would probably be easier to find a new job.

I completely understand. Since 2007 when I got my CCW I learned there are a LOT of laws concerning conceal carry. Every state is different, read as much as you possibly can and keep up to date with all laws. Some states will change/add/remove laws and it's your responsibility to know them. If you travel to another state read and get to know their laws, they may honor your states permit but that doesn't mean the laws are the same. If I travel I Look up each states laws on conceal carry, print them off and bring that with me. In case I have questions I can find the answers. http://www.usacarry.com/ is a great website, they try their best to keep current with everything they can.

I work ft at a facory too. I would like a gun for protection. I meant things are getting crazy in the city where I live. The heroin usage is up 600 percent alot of robberies. Stabbings and shootings are happening here in this city too now. I wasnt concerned couple years ago. If I don t have a hand gun and its a concealed carry state, I understand being a bouncer its not bright to have it ok, but why not have it for protection? Is it because I would be new to guns? I see flyfisher stated I shouldn t get one. I was just curious why?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with obtaining and CCW and a carry gun for protection.  I have one, my wife has one and our family shoots regularly.  We have gone beyond the basic training for our CCW and did so based on the changing of the times in the area we live and work.

My concern is you feel a threat in an environment where there are a lot of people present and opening fire.  15-17% of rounds hit their intended target during the heat of moment.  Those extra bodies in the bar or club can quickly become casualties.  I am not sure I would carry in that environment where there is such a high risk for hurting others.  Now to carry it into the building and lock it up while on the floor and retrieve it before I left, I get that.  Again, just my 2 cents.

You live or travel to Milwaukee every day. If I was in your shoes. I would for personal protection. Not for the bouncer job.

Your boss also must not know gun laws. Granted it has been a while since I even looked at WI gun laws. I could have sworn I saw some thing about guns, bars, and liquor stores. If my memory serves me right. Guns are not allowed on a property. That sells liquor, or if they have a liquor license.

If you have never owned or carried a firearm, then you need a real gun safety class.  Then a CCW class, then tactical training after that.  You are going to need to shoot 1000s of rounds before you carry.

I believe everyone should carry, after proper training.  I grew up with firearms, had Uncle Sam give me lots of tactical training, and now carry everywhere its legal.  I trained my wife and daughter on the basics then sent them to tactical training.  We shoot at least once a month and enjoy it as a family.

Get comfortable, then get good, then be prepared to use it.

I totally understand the concealed carry course is 4 hours. Im not just going to go then get my permit then start carrying the gun without ever practicing or firing it. I do travel to Milwaukee quite a bit. I believe if you have the owners permission at that bar as long as you re not drinking you can carry. Bouncing wouldnt be a good idea with it. I get that.

I seen the s and w shield and the springfield xd line both have good reviews.

If you have taken hunters saftey. You can skip the course. Don't know if you knew that. Plus most of the times hunter saftey is uslly free. While cwc is about 100 bucks.

I was asking my local gun dealer about the course. They said hunters saftey is the way to go. Because it is almost the same thing. As the cwc class. Like I said above. It is usually free.'

As for guns. That will take what fits you. I have giant hands. So for me finding a gun. That is small enough to conceal. While fitting in my hands is hard. that Is one of the reasons why I do not have a cwc yet. Plus I don't feel like I need it yet. But I am sure I will need it one day.

I never stated you shouldn't get a firearm but was pointing out using a firearm as a bouncer is more complicated than it first seems.  Personally, i don';t really care if anyone gets a firearm but with owning a firearm comes responsibility and it seems like that has all been covered by others and your attitude seems to be on the right track.

I would not skip the CCW course.  Not only is it a safety course but we spent two hours going over CCW laws and role playing specific situations. I took the course 15 years ago and again last year with my wife.  The last one was only $40 because we are a member at the local gun club and it was well worth it.

I carry a Ruger SR9c.  I'm 230 with large hands.  The double stack 10 +1 mag fits my hand just right.  Plus it has adjustable sights but still small enough to carry under a t shirt.
