$100 To $150 Baitcasting Combo

Hey all I have some money burning a hole in my pocket, just wondering what kind of rod and reel you would get in this price range.

Mainly going to be a worm and jig rod for flipping and pitching. I will also throw mainly texas rigs and some senkos. Also what # lline and what variety would you all use.

I'd put it away and save some more, get yourself a good rod and good reel and you'll have it a long time and won't have to look to get a new one in 2 years. For a rod, yeah, the same for a reel, you'll find good reels in the $150 class but to get both you'll need to settle for lower end and maybe you get life out of the rod but you will sure end up with a graphite framed reel that will work for a season or two depending how much you fish. I'd say $300 can get you a solid casting rod and casting reel, save and shoot for that, you'll be glad you did. Even $200 as there are some good aluminum framed reels at the $100 price point and rods as well but don't go below that mark.

For just $50 more though- $200 total brand new- I don't think you can do much better than a Lew's LFS and a 7'1" M/F *** Black.  That's a great all around setup for sure, and IMO a relative bargain at that price.

I'd have to second this.  I know how hard it is to hold on to the money once you have it in hand.  If you are concerned that it would get spent elsewhere before you could get the other amount saved, then I would look at buying a decent rod or reel now, and then get the other with the next $100-$150 you get saved up.  This is what I usually have to do.  That way it doesn't hurt as much.

 

Of course it could also depend on what you want the rod for.  If you are looking at getting a cranking rod, then it doesn't need to be as expensive as a rod used for lures requiring a lot of sensitivity.  In that case $150 should do the trick....especially if you don't mind buying used.

$150 will get you a nice setup if you wait until the BPS Spring Classic. The Pro Qualifier is a good value at $100, better at $80 during the Classic and a steal at around $65 during the reel trade in.

BPS pro qualifier/carbonlite combos go for $160 year around.  I bought one a couple of years ago and it has served me well.  I have the 7' mh carbonlite and I use it for the same techniques you intend.  It's sensitive and light.  Get the 7.1 pq.

W&M Skeet reese 7:1 reel (50.00) and a falcon bucoo micro (100.00 or less) i like the 6'10" H but the 7'MH might be good for your application.

I'm going to chime in and sound like the other parents.....  save some more money and then get your combo.  My first bait cast combo came in around $100.  Within six months I'd upgraded to a BPS Johhny Morris bait caster & 7' MF BPS JM rod (I'll just blame THIS forum), which came in just over $200, and for that extra dough, I feel like I got 3X the combo.

I have many combos. I have one that is about $350 with all I have custom put into it.

I also have a $20 BPS Brawler rod with a $50 black max reel. Smoothest reel and most durable rod. This is a $70 combo obviously.

In use this cheap combo most of the time as it has caught my PB and numerous 6lbs.+ bass.

Spend wisely. The combo needs to be reliable, but the angler catches the fish with priceless skill; not expensive gear.

Idk what it is about a black max reel but I really liked it. Inexpensive reel and is the best to learn on. Pick up a cheap first generation veritas and you'll love it. If you see the bps pq under $80 get it. Get two of them.

I'm a big BPS rod/reel guy. I have ***'s, Veritas, Carbonlites, and a couple Lew's speed stick's and to be honest for the price point other's are urging you to save up to BPS combo's are an awesome deal. I just purchased 2 more combo's. The Carbonlite/PQ and the Carbonlite/Carbonlite. Look into these rod's and I'm sure you'd love them. Great for an angler on a budget but also great rod's and reel's period.

Since does Walmart sell Diawa Tatulas? I have never seen anything Diawa except that black spinning rod with the eva grips.

That's a sick deal on the rod. Almost 50^ off. I was looking at those rods and wanted to get one when the tatula series came out.

I agree that if you save just a little more and have to have new stuff you could get some better gear than you would for 150 total for a worm/jig combo. If you sepend just a little more you could get a med action clarus rod for 65 shipped at tw which is darn good for that price for a jig/worm rod and either a t3 blastic on clearance if you throw lighter stuff like 1/4 oz weights a lot, or a tatula from any number of places. The lews speed spool and from what ive heard, the lews lfs. I dont have any personal experience.with the lfs but im going to try one myself here soon. Or if you throw a little heavier than that normally you get a mh. The daiwa t rods are great for the price too on the same site. if ypu go used on the reel you could probably find better stuff for the 150 if you are stuck on that.

Now that you say that, yes, there are certain brands and price points they don't discount.  Shimano & Abu Garcia come to mind, but I bought $150+ reels.  Perhaps there's not much margin at those price points.  I can't complain if there are exclusions.  It's nice that they offer the discount.  They did, however, apply the discount when I bought my Ascend 128T kayak.  A++

Save up a little more and get yourself a St. Croix Mojo Bass with a Lews LFS. I don't have a LFS but it's supposed to better than the original speed spool and I have one of those and it's great!
