Will You Try A Cherrywood Hd?

Hi Folks,

 

This Cherrywood HD I bought to hold me over until BPS gets me my new rod (see http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/144789-cherrywood-hd-casting-rod/ for my short review.)

 

If those of you who can afford it would go out and buy one of these things, I'd really like to compare notes.  They're like 20 bucks, hybrid, and sensitive.

 

I'm guessing "hybrid" means carbon and glass.  I can't find anything on the subject of their construction.

 

There's almost literally nothing out there on these rods, but I was impressed, at least in one day of fishing.

 

There's opinions on almost all else here, but these Cherrywood rods kick up almost nothing.

I have a few josh i use them all no probs.someone said they break easy i never broke any of mine .i use a couple older pistol grips for my 4600s and some spinning rods in the HD .never a issue .if you look around places like Ollies has them for 16$ and i found 2 med 6ft spinning rods at k mart for 5 each. I will buy more.

I got the 7' Medium casting rod, which to me felt more like medium-light. The top half really flexes.  I saw a video clip with Mike Iaconnelli where he described using a "whippy" rod to throw soft plastics weightless. This rod does exactly what I was hoping it would for a more than reasonable price. I can really sling a weightless fluke with it. And on top of that, it works great for spinnerbaits and lipless rattle baits. The hooks don't get ripped out of the bass' mouth easily due to the hybrid construction . You can really feel that vibration coming from the lure. Eventually, I might get the medium heavy for dragging jigs and Texas rigged plastics. I've checked one out at BPS and it feels pretty sturdy. It's hard to beat the price for the quality. Hope this helps ya.

Yup, it's a bit whippy, but not near as much as the old fiberglass MH jobs.  (Dad has a Lew's from the '70s that, while it's a good rod, takes a lot of getting used to and will never be as sensitive as graphite.)

 

The Cherrywood strikes me as a tough, flexible, sensitive rod.

I picked up a 7' MH spinning  version a little while back and put a Shimano Sienna 2500 on it. The combo balances pretty well. I don't think the rod is totally junk but I do have a couple complaints. One I can live with, the other is a deal breaker for me. The handle is just a little short for me but I can deal with it. The deal breaker is the reel seat. I hate it. Every time I cast I can feel the reel move. I've tightened it down as far as I dare and can still feel it move. Perhaps a bit smaller and lighter reel would eliminate the movement but it would change the balance making it more tip heavy than I would like.

It's not total junk but I'm gonna put her on the launching pad and send her away from here.

I have 3 rods all same make a model except size and length, each bought at a different time, all needed a shim, an obvious design problem,  folding newspaper works well as a shim because I can adjust the thickness.  I've had the same newspaper shims in place for several years without changing them.

I have the medium heavy fast action casting version of the cherrywood HD and i think it's great. VERY SENSETIVE and feels good in my hands. A steal for 20$ (definately worth more).

The days of using a $20 rod are looooong gone for me.  Nice to see guys are reviewing rods at this price point.  I would have no idea what to recommend at that price.

"Hybrid" when talking rod construction can be either glass/graphite or two different modulus graphite. Both methods are used to produce a desired action/power combos. Users of entry level tackle probably aren't the main demographic of forums in general so, yes, it's nice to see this kind of help being offered.

My aunt has a Cherrywood that I've made a cast or two with. It seemed a little too whippy. Might have been better had it been a higher power rod. For a few dollars more you can get the Amp which has a bit more backbone. Unfortunately they have limited models, but they make for decent cheap cranking rod.

Yes, but I changed my mind.  I have $35 rod that IMO is a piece of junk, 5'6 light rod with a ul reel.  I didn't use this combo for maybe 5 years, between the whippyness of the rod and mono line it was unenjoyable.  I put some braid on a couple of weeks ago and I'm having fun catching 4- 5# fish on it.  In no way does it come remotely close to my other light power rod, the backbone isn't there, I wouldn't use it for peacocks.

At the $20 price point, I've seen some Berkley lightning rod shocks at Walmart for $20.96 clearance on the rack
