Triton_Mike Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Here is a swimbait that I built for my own use. It's a Rago Generic Trout copy which has been discontinued. I designed it as a bait that duck walks on the surface. When you begin your very slow retrieve the bait has a wide waddle on the surface and the plexiglass fins are protruding up. I was lucky I nailed the weighting perfectly on the first try. The entire bait from tip to tip is 9 3/4 inches. MIke Quote
Randall Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 Mike, nice looking bait. Not near as ugly as mine. :)Is it wood or made from a mold? Quote
Triton_Mike Posted February 4, 2007 Author Posted February 4, 2007 Yeah mine's a little more modern lookin I made this one from scratch out of bass wood about 6 months ago. Mike Quote
THEbassmaster Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 awesome swimbait. i have been trying to make some, but cant figure out how to get the joint crack small like yours. what kind of screw eyes are you using, or are you using a wire-through system? thanks aaron Quote
Triton_Mike Posted February 4, 2007 Author Posted February 4, 2007 Bassmaster, I got the joint crack by drawing it out with a pencil before I cut it to make sure I got it centered the best I could. ONce I got it drawn I cut it with a small coping saw by hand. The screws eyelets are just that they screw into the wood. I screwed them in at an angle and then bent them in so that if I get a sixable fish it's pulling against a bent screw rather than the wood holding the screw in place. Hope that makes sense. Making a swimbait is very easy to do and requires very little tools. It's actually cheaper than making plastics once you buy the plastic, melting pot, molds etc. I built the lure above with block of basswood pencil saber saw file coping saw screw eyelets spring for the screw on tail lead for the ballast and sandpaper. HOwever thats not counting the plexiglass fins but you can get a grunt load of fins out of one small sheet of plexiglass. The fins look really AWESOME on the bait during the sloww retrieve. ga_hawghauler Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Nice looking bait. i have been working on a swim bait similiar to yours but the problem i have ran into is finding eyelets that is small enough for what i need. Is the ones you used some you picked up at a local hardware store? Quote
Triton_Mike Posted February 9, 2007 Author Posted February 9, 2007 Hawghauler, I buy my eyelets from either Jannsnetcraft.com or staminainc.com Both specialize in tackle making and both have a pretty good FREE detailed catalog with tackle making supplies. You just reminded me I need to buy more eyelets Mike Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted February 9, 2007 Super User Posted February 9, 2007 That looks great Mike. Quote
Supermat Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 Tritonmike, that looks killer! That is a PERFECT knock off and its a sweet color. Nothing like pounding them on something you've made yourself. Quote
Triton_Mike Posted February 9, 2007 Author Posted February 9, 2007 Thanks Matt, Thats a compliment coming from you ~ LOL. I need to get a video of this bad boy in action. I outdid myself action wise LOL. I got a little something else in the works but just not ready to show it yet. This one isn't a knockoff and fills a niche that I haven't seen filled in the swimbait market yet. stay tuned Mike Quote
Supermat Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 Looking forward to the next one for sure! I hope "knock off" didn't leave the wrong vibe... I really am impressed. That bait you made is SWEET! I've tried to make a few baits and they've never turned out how I wanted. You've got a talent and I don't see a thing wrong with re-making a bait that isn't available anymore, especially if you put a sweet color scheme on it and let us drool over the pics! Quote
