On a recent post I asked about whether I should get a Lews reel or a Shimano citica. Many people said that the Daiwa tatula is the best one to get. I was just wondering which one, the 100, the 100 type R, or the type HD. Any recommendations would be great thanks.

100 for all around use, type r for a faster gear ratio, and HD for big baits like swimbaits or monster cranks.

The type R comes in a 6:3:1 and 8:1:1

Has a few things the regular tatula doesn't.

The Hd holds too much line for basic bass fishing imo so it wouldn't even be on my list.

The standard tatula comes in 6:3:1 and 7:3:1 plus a 5:4:1 model for deep cranks.

A good all around ratio/ipt is 6:x:1 so now you have to decide if the few extra features of the type R are worth the extra money to you or not.

The type-R isn't worth the extra money IMO unless you want it for the 8:1 ratio.

Can you remind me what he differences are again?

The quick ones I can remember are the Zion drag star and a lighter spool. It's a smidge lighter and has 2 crb bearings also. I can't remember anything other than that. Honestly between my regular and type R I can't tell a difference.

Different paint, ported frame, red anodized spool and tension cap and available in a high speed model. What are we looking at for a difference in actual price.

If you are serious about purchasing a Tatula contact Ron at ValleybSports, site sponsor and get the R series.

Yeah the porting and spool make that .3oz difference. I didn't mention paint or accents. I prefer the dark grey personally and I don't like red either so the regular appeals to me more. Only reason I have an R model is because I wanted the ipt of the 8:1 for frogs and flipping/pitching heavy stuff.

The red and black looks good but it is tiresome, it has been done to death.   I found the Tatula for 92 and the Type R for 119, so that is 25-30 dollar difference.   Seems like to me it just boils down to what you want, they are a very good reel in this price range.

Not to thread-jack, but would you mind shooting me a PM where you found the Type-R for 119?  That's an awesome deal.

Honestly between the two reels SO FAR I can not tell a difference but that may come out with time.  That is kind of the way it was with my Citica and Curado Es.  Either way as long as the Tatula is comfortable for you and you get familiar with the brakes, it's an awesome reel.

Agreed. Even TackleTour wasn't impressed with the Type R. The regular Tatula can be had for around $90 if you look hard enough. That's a steal. I've toyed with the idea of ditching my Curado Is because the Tatula is so impressive.

The Tatula is one that is just too clumsy for me and if you have any time with a smaller, lighter casting reel then you may want to hold the Tatula before buying one. I'm not saying it is a bad reel, but it is just about 8 ounces and the top of the reel tapers out to accommodate the TWS, most reels the frame at that part of the reel tapers inward making the Tatula feel like it is really wide but it isn't. If you don't have much experience with other casting reels then this won't be an issue for you but for a small minority of anglers, including myself, it just feels strange and heavy.

Weird. I switch between my Tatulas and Curado Is and don't have any issues.

I like my Type-R a little better but only because of the color. Everyone is right on the money though, you really can't tell a difference between the Type-R and the Regular Tatula.

I sold My Curado I and kept my Tatula's because I thought they felt better, plus I hated the side plate button on the Curado I.

You can get a Tatula for $110 and a Type R for $130 on amazon.

I chose the Type R in 6.3, because I like the red parts.  Performance wise, there will be no real difference.

I chose to replace the 4 bushings (2 worm drive, 2 grips) to basic boca bearings.  Total cost $10.  It's a touch smoother while reeling in a fish, but no practical difference in casting.

Happy fishing, D

The type r definitely looks better, comes in 8.1:1 gear ratio, and is slightly lighter. The tatula 7.3:1 is great for all-around use. Haven't used the hd, but it looks like a great reel for deep cranking and swimbaits.:)
