Unexpected Win?

It's been a long couple of seasons for me since I won a club tourney.  Well, it happened last weekend and was very unexpected.  Back seated with another angler in a draw club and caught a small limit.  There are lots of GREAT sticks in this club and about 30 anglers fishing so I was sure my sack would be middle of the field best case.  Turns out it was a tough day and I won by a couple pounds.  Have you ever had one of these wins when you just knew it was not your day?

We won one like that this year. Two good fish in the box rolling back we never thought we had a chance until we got back to the dock and found out fishing sucked for everyone.

My various partners and I have won 7 tournaments since I started tournament fishing in 2008, and not a single one of them did I feel "was in the bag" until they handed us the money LOL.  The last two we have one were tough, low weight grinds, that I actually felt coming in that we had no chance.

Yep did it this year myself.  Had around 18 pounds at a lake where 20+ is the norm.  Got to the weigh in and everyone had 1-2 fish.  Had the sand baggers wait til the last minute and they had like 9 pounds.  We doubled the field and the whole day we were like, one more fish or we are one fish from the money... I have been fortunate this year.  two wins, two seconds and a third out of 7 tournys.  We have actually been paid to fish this year.  That makes it so nice not worrying about gas and oil money...

My first time with the club on Erie, and we had like 13 lbs., after making a run to big waters on the Canadian side of the river.  We came in a very close second.  That's when I realized, no one really wanted to leave the harbor, and most bags would have harbor rats.  I decided that weather permitting, I was going to beat them mercilessly on that lake, and have since - twice.So, it was unexpected to do so well with 13 on a world class fishery, but after that, weather permitting, I knew I could win.  Both times after, I even invited a couple guys to follow me, and see who can really fish.  No one took me up.

 The last two we have one were tough, low weight grinds, that I actually felt coming in that we had no chance.

 

I hear ya on the grind.  I put on small tournaments on Mondays for guys like me who are off during the week.  We fished Ray Roberts last Monday which has nice hydrilla, rock, and timber which usually produce 14-16# winning sacks.  This was a team tourney but my partner was out so I started off at a disadvantage fishing alone.  Wind was out of the east all day and the bite was non existant but I kept up the grind.  Finally got one keeper an hour from weigh in that weighed 1.40# and thought about dumping it before I headed in.  Only one other team of the six we had weighed a fish and it was 1.42#.  Missed a decent pay out by .02#!

The first two tournaments I won were unexpected. I was 16 fishing in an adults bass club and had never even seen either lake and had no idea what to expect it to take to win. I've won quite a few since, only once was I pretty positive I'd won it, I had 2 3's, 2 4's, and a 7 at Truman Lake in Missouri, blew that one out of the water   Then we had 3 keepers on one of the toughest lakes in the area on a weeknight tournament last April. Only 4 other boats showed up because of bad weather. I've won at this lake a few times with 1 fish that didn't go 2 pounds, so 3 is almost always a lock. Wouldn't you know, one other fish weighed in but it was a little over 6 pounds   second biggest bass I've ever seen from that lake and a quarter pound heavier than our 3 fish.

I never think I got it won.

I learned a long time ago that no matter how well or how poorly the day went there will always be somebody who is on the right pattern, at the right time, and in the right place to beat you.

And there will always be someone who struggled like you or worse...Unless you blank.

The second club tournament I won was the first time I fished as a boater. It was spring and time was running out. I was in the back of a cove and had zero fish.  There had to be shallow bass here , just could not get any to bite. I was to young and stupid to know I was out of the running. There were two stumps to fish and then I had to head to the weigh in empty handed. I wanted a lure to resemble  a large shad and not give the bass enough time to study it . I tied on a Bomber Long A Minnow for the very first time. I cast  past the stumps and retrieved it as fast as I could. Two bass totaling thirteen lbs fell for it and won by two lbs.  . Its the best tournament move I ever made and that lure remains a top shelf fish producer thirty five years later .

August 11th 1979 night tounament Toledo Bend

About 7:45 I caught a bass that weighed 3# even on Millionaire's Point in the mouth of Lowe's Creek. By 8:30 a cold front blows in earlier than preditcted with NW winds at 30 mph & gust to 45. Temperatures dropped 25-30 degrees & rain started at about 1" per hour. After fighting it far 1 1\2 hours I told my draw partner, the camp is a 15 minute run...we gone!

The next morning we trailered to the weigh-in; I took 1st place stringer & 1st place big bass!

Out of 37 boats only 12 bass wete caught & those guys stayed out all night!

My buddy and I won a 3 fish team tournament with just over 4 pounds last year. There were about 30 boats. Never would have guessed that would have won...
