tentimesover Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I've recently begun to fish with a jig. One thing I am confused with is how to attach the trailer to the jig hook. I typically take a plastic craw fish and pinch off the tail up to about an inch behind the head. The approach I'm using now is to just hook through the plastic and leave it hanging. It doesn't look very good to me. I'm getting a few bites but am losing some fish shaking it off too and I'm wondering about how much hook I've got left after going though a 1/4 inch of plastic. Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted September 16, 2014 Super User Posted September 16, 2014 I thread the craw type trailer on the hook so that the plastic fills up the hook all the way to the base of the jig. The trailer length is important for a few reasons.. Sometimes a larger (whole bait) size trailer will get a bigger bite. The size of the trailer (and Type) can fine tune fall rate. I do pinch off the end a bit at times to present a more compact offering. Something that is often over looked when using a craw and you want the legs to flap on the fall unencumbered, ensure your trailers position is such that it's not brushing up against the shirt material. You can either trim the skirt or leave the trailer of sufficient length to be forward enough to clear the skirt. At times, this is a game changer. If you're looking for a very compact bait with more of a gliding action, then having a very short trailer (right up in the skirt) works well. A-Jay Quote
Lazz Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I was going to ask this very question just the other day. With craws there's no issues but with a chunk im a bit confused as the op stated do you just put the hook through the chunky part? This just doesn't look right to me? Quote
EmersonFish Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I can't really add much. Good info here. I usually thread my trailers, but how far on I thread them depends on the profile I want the bait to have. Also, I think some people believe that the skirt that comes on the jig itself cannot be tampered with. I'm not afraid to take some scissors to that as well (along with the weedguard). One jig and one trailer can have a lot of different looks and be fished a lot of different ways. Just make sure you don't do anything with the trailer that will impede your hook penetration. Personally, I'm not a fan of the bulkier "chunk" trailers that people just run the hook through. I know they've probably caught millions of fish, but they don't instill great confidence in me. I have used them, but when I have, I still somewhat thread them on the hook so they sit on the shank rather than on the bend. Quote

Zach P Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Chunks - find the middle of the chunk, push it through the hook until it is in the middle of the hook bend Full size trailer - thread it on I'm sure some guys have different methods but this is what has worked for me and probably 99% of the population that fishes. Todd2 Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Slightly off topic...if you're using pork, thread about an inch of old worm up the shank then punch your pork on. This will keep the pig from sliding up the shank and blocking your hookset. It adds some body and color too. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 16, 2014 Super User Posted September 16, 2014 It depends on the trailer, the fall rate I want, and profile... Here's a few examples: Just gotta figure out what they like.... 2 Quote
boostr Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I thread my chunks on. With the Rage chunks I usually thread it all the way to where the hook comes out between the eyes. I guess if it's a bigger jig before the eyes. Quote
