PondHopper96 Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Was late to school do I figured I'd get in a little fishing before I left so went to the local pond. I cast my spook out and decided to tie something on my spinning rod, all of a sudden I hear a huge splash and see my rod going towards the water. I get a hold of the thing set the hook and I thought I had an absolute hoss. Got him about 15 feet from the bank and realized it was a carp, still a blast to catch though and a huge fight! He weighed 34 pounds! Quote
RSM789 Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 That guy is so big, it doesn't even look like he has a carp mouth!! Congratulations!! The only time I ever catch carp on artificials is when I snag them in the head with a deep diving crankbait. 1 Quote

The only time I ever catch carp on artificials is when I snag them in the head with a deep diving crankbait. It's a grass carp, that's why they don't have a sucker mouth. I sometimes target them with flies I tie specifically for grass carp or when I'm lazy, I'll chum with corn and toss a few rods out. Lots of fun, even though they don't fight well for their size, any species of fish over 25" is going to pull! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 16, 2014 Global Moderator Posted September 16, 2014 It wasn't a bone colored spook was it? We're starting to see a correlation between grass carp eating bone colored baits around here. I caught this whale on a bone colored 168 S Waver last year, watched it shoot off the bottom and T bone my bait, otherwise I would have never believed it actually tried to eat my swimbait. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 17, 2014 Global Moderator Posted September 17, 2014 It was a bone colored spook! Makes me wonder about that color! Another member from the KC area just caught a 25lb grass carp a couple weeks ago on a bone colored crankbait that hit the bait as soon as he started cranking it away from the bank and had the bait fully in it's mouth. Probably just a coincidence, but it does seem pretty odd. Quote
Snakehead Whisperer Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Here in these parts lots of fly fishing anglers tie "mulberry" flies to target carp during the mulberry season. They do pretty well on them. The presentation is to make it look like the mulberry fell from the tree. Carp slam those things. Quote
