OHbassmaster12 Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to re-use the hooks on the jigheads that I have messed up. When I first started pouring jigheads last year many of them turned out deformed and the lead didn't make it all the way to the bottom of the mold. I dipped the head back into the melted lead and it took the lead off of my hook, but it left some lead in the eye of my hook that is very sharp. I have tried a small torch and it didn't seem to do the job. The mustad hooks that I am using are fairly expensive and I would still like to use them, but I don't want to take the risk of the sharp lead cutting my line. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thanks. Quote

jigfisherman Posted February 4, 2007 Posted February 4, 2007 I reuse some of my hooks that don't pour right on jigs that I use for myself, you can take a razor blade and scratch off the lead, I have used a torch also when the hook gets hot shake it hard and it will come out of the eye and I have also use a rag and wiped it off after iI run it over the torch a few times. harshman Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I've re-used hooks as well in the same manner you described by dipping the messed up pour in the lead pot, then I use a rag to wipe off any excess and while still hot I use a tooth pick to clean out the eye if there is any build up. I'm not sure if reheatin gthe hook messes up it's strength but it shouldn't be any harder on it than getting it hot during the pour. Harshman Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 What I do is put the head back into the lead, after it has melted off then quickly wipe the hook eye area off with a towl. Got to be careful not to burn yourself or start the towl on fire. Usually there isnt enough heat there but I just wanted to throw that disclaimer out there. Quote
OHbassmaster12 Posted February 6, 2007 Author Posted February 6, 2007 Thanks for the suggestions. I tried whiping the lead off with a towel and it works great. Quote
