FirstnameLastname Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I would say my personal best is probably a little under a half pound. I caught it on night crawlers in a small lake. World record sunfish is 5 pounds 12oz I belief, caught in Mexico. Not a bluegill but close. Anyway what are your best bluegills and what we're you using? Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted September 15, 2014 Super User Posted September 15, 2014 Right around 2 lbs. I caught him at a sandpit on a Bomber crankbait, he was almost completely black, had a big knot on his forehead. My son had never seen one get this big and because of his coloring and the knot on his head did not even recognize the fish as a bluegill. I have caught many over a 1 lb , but never anything close to size of this beast. 1 Quote
RSM789 Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 All of the large bluegill I have caught were accidental, caught while fishing for bass. The largest was 2.5 lbs, caught on a plastic worm & was as big as my face. I have caught a dozen or so in the 2lb range on everything from topwaters to crankbaits. They get funny looking when they get that big, it is as if they outgrow their head. Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted September 15, 2014 Super User Posted September 15, 2014 Not sure on the weight, but I have caught about 5 in the 11-12" range. All from the same pond, we have caught some there on trick worms and superflukes, they are big enough to fit a 3/0 EWG in their mouth! Quote
FirstnameLastname Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 Wow, that's a panfish I couldn't fit In a pan. Quote
PondHopper96 Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 My buddy caught one when fishing for bass that weighed 2.6! He got him on a square bill Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted September 15, 2014 Super User Posted September 15, 2014 Have had brim in Florida looked to be the size of a skillet. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 15, 2014 Global Moderator Posted September 15, 2014 I caught some monster bluegills out of my grandparents old pond. I used to use a tiny lightwire hook with an ultralight to hook a big grasshopper under the collar and let it kick around the surface with no weight or anything. One day there was a school of huge ones under their dock, 12 inchers that were bigger than my grandpa's hand by a lot. No idea what they weighed, certainly in the 1.5 pound range. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted September 15, 2014 Super User Posted September 15, 2014 My PB would probably be around a pound Quote
Coherence Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 2 lbs 1 oz caught on a beetle spin when I was messing around trying to catch perch and crappie one day. Needless to say I was shocked when I pulled that thing out. Haven't seen one even remotely close to that big since. Quote
Nelson Wormefeller Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Here's mine. 9.25" length, weight unknown Quote
Super User Munkin Posted September 23, 2014 Super User Posted September 23, 2014 Caught one 13" on a DS worm and though I had a decent bass. Allen Quote
