CTGalloway21 Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 so trying out power pro 10lb on my spinning reel today. First time using braid in a while and I had two fish completely snap it in half far above my knot. I am a heavy line guy and normally throw big swimbaits etc but trying to finesse it up some. Any reason why 10lb braid would snap so easily? Quote

Idk how you set the hook on the two fish that got away, however your hooksets cannot be too hard or else you will snap the line. The only other thing I can think of was that the line could have been frayed already. 2 Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted September 15, 2014 Super User Posted September 15, 2014 Loosen your drag. No shock absorption at all with such thin diameter line. It doesn't take much to drive a sharp hook in a bass with braid so you can give a little. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Tie on a 10-15 ft fluoro leader to absorb some of that shock, and maybe step up to 15 lb. Quote

TrippyJai Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Move up to 20lb or 30lb. It's only 6lb/8lb test diameter. No reason to use 10 or 15 unless your crappy fishing throwing 1/16oz grubs/tubes. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted September 15, 2014 Super User Posted September 15, 2014 Wow, I use 10 lb PP for all my spinning reels and have only snapped it when it was abraded. Granted, I'm not a swimbait guy, so not used to doing dramatic hooksets. Definitely loosen the drag and see if that helps. I've caught a *lot* of bass 5 - 6+ on 10 lb braid -- but I always (always) use a leader. Just my M.O. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted September 15, 2014 Super User Posted September 15, 2014 I run #10 pp and never snapped the line unless I'm snagged. Hooksets aren't much different vs my casting setups but my drag is set pretty loose. Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted September 15, 2014 Super User Posted September 15, 2014 Ive used 10# PP with bc gear frog fishing slop pretty good hooksets never have snapped the line. I havent set into any "big" fish though 4# and under. With 10+ years with 10#PP on spinning & bc no snap offs on hook sets. Quote

Why? Quote

Cause I can Avatar pic was with 10#PP and spro frog from here about 75' out brought it over that fallen tree branch too. Pretty much in the center of the pic you can see hole and the trail to the right where it was brought in. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 15, 2014 Global Moderator Posted September 15, 2014 I use 10lb PP Super Slick on my shakyhead rod and have never broken on the hookset. I use a short 10lb fluoro leader, don't think that makes much of a difference though. It says it's 2lb diameter but it looks much more like 6lb to me. I've fished with 2lb test quite a bit for bluegills and trout, 2lb looks like a spider web. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I'd check the guides on your rod to make sure they isn't an issue with one being cracked or missing. 10lb power pro, the standard power pro, rather than the super slick, is virtually unbreakable on spinning tackle. If it's not the knot where you're joining your leader then it's going to be a ring on the rod or possibly the line roller on your reel that are knicking the line and causing problems, unless you're trying to drag the line through mussel beds. CTGalloway21 Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 thanks for the tips. I will definitely check the line guides for breaks. Quote
AMAC Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I run 20# seaguar smackdown braid on my spinning set up. I have my drag set farily loose as well. My hookset is simply a fast reel to load the rod and then a lean. Not a snap or drop slack to em just simply reel set em. You will me surprised at how easy it is to hook fish this way due to.the non stretch of braid. Also the seaguar smack down is an 8 strand braid so it is much much quiter and it is easier on the guides that 4 strand braid. Quote
