sarcazmo Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Just built my first rod based on the MHX HM 822. Haven't had a chance to fish it, its on the rod dryer right now. I'm already looking to do it again. I'll probably build another spinning rod as my arsenal is a bit short. Probably something a touch heavier than the 822 for shakey heads. Just curious if anyone has used either of the new batson blanks. The Eternity2 is fairly priced about the HM MHX and the Immortal seems to be in line with their RX8 series used to be. I will say from an aesthetic standpoint I think the Immortal seies look pretty cool, not a huge fan of the cobalt blue eternity 2. According to batson there might be unpainted versions available which would be ideal. Any reviews/impressions would be great. Quote
TBO Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 you made your own rod? sounds cool, do you have pics? Quote
sarcazmo Posted October 3, 2014 Author Posted October 3, 2014 Its pretty basic, not much to look at. I like my rods pretty minimal so it's about as basic as it gets. I think anyone that has any amount of patience and small amount of time to research is capable of building a basic rod. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I've used a few Batson blanks in the past and liked them. I'm not totally convinced that the new lineup is much more than renaming and branding which imo doesn't justify the price increase. I always liked their titanium color though. Quote

Funny thing I've noticed. I've been looking for the old rx8+. Doesnt look like thats available but their 823 still is. From what I've seen it's still just as expensive as the new immortal line. They seem to be pushing that eternity2 pretty hard. If it can come close to the other top end rods out there, SCV, NFC, k2, etc, or even pretty close seems like it might be a pretty good deal. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I really think you can put the HM MHX in that same group. Each maker has certain powers and actions that you may prefer over the others. Mix and Matching is probably the way to go for the best of all worlds. Experimenting can get expensive quick though. 1 Quote

IMO its perfect for drop shot and light shakey heads. Love the taper, loads up nice, loads well into the butt for great fish fighting potential if that makes sense. Sensitive enough to feel what's going on on the bottom. So far it's handled fish over 4lbs without breaking a sweat. I just got back from canada for some walleye and lake trout fishing. That rod would be perfect for light jigs/minnows for walleye too. Really impressed with the MHX blank. Did I mention the whole set up was light too? For slightly heavier shakey heads I do love my lamiglas infinity 703s though. Wish lami would market their stuff a bit more. Love that their blanks are made in the US, and will build on one in the future. I actually emailed MHX and they said they were releasing their new lineup within the next month or so using a nano resin technique of their own. Pretty excited to see how they shape up as well and I may have to build a new version of the HM822 if they release one at launch. Next couple of weeks I'm going to be selling a couple kistlers, dobyns dx, airrus, and phenix rods to fund a few rod builds. This seems like an exciting time to build new rods :-) Quote
papajoe222 Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 MudHole has some MHX blanks on sale and $4.95 shipping. I've built three rods using Baston blanks from kits and was impressed with the blank itself. The components added a little too much weight to the finished rod IMO. I don't have any experience with either of the newer series Bastons though. Mike and I just had a conversation on a very similar topic and I decided to go with the MHX Quote
sarcazmo Posted October 11, 2014 Author Posted October 11, 2014 I think Mudhole is clearing them out to make room for their new MHX blanks. Supposed to be using a nano resin similar to other blanks. Should be interesting. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 13, 2014 Super User Posted October 13, 2014 I heard that the Toray reel seats from Batson are really nice, I've been thinking hard about doing custom rods but I'm so deep into making jigs, spinnerbaits, and tying hair that rod building would mean I either stop pouring or tying as there isn't enough money left unless I quit fishing and then what is the sense of doing any of it. You don't need to stop making the other stuff, just add a rod build or two over the winter. You can use the money you save from not buying groceries. Who needs 'em anyway? That whole eat, sleep, fish and repeat mantra is over rated IMO. Quote
