I've got a Lowrance Elite 4x HDI. Sonar and Downscan. I think it was $200.

How do you like the Lowrance Elite-4x HDI? I am considering options in the 200-300$ range and have been giving this unit a serious look.

I like it a lot. I think it is probably the best you could do for $200. With the screen being small, it is sometimes hard to see things, especially if you are running it split screen. But, even the elite 5 is almost double the price and not that much bigger of a screen. I have my transducer on my trolling motor and the head unit mounted on my front deck, so when I am standing, it is quite a ways away from my eyes. If it was mounted on your console, you could see it fine.

Yeah, mine will be console mounted. I was also looking at the Elite-5 but don't want to spend that kind of cash right now. The Elite-4x HDI is slotted right in the middle and I have noticed you can't get a much better unit without jumping way up in price. I think I will order one.

i just installed the 4xhdi on my ride 135 kayak.  i've still yet to figure it out, but it's a huge step up from the Garmin echo unit i had on my old kayak.  i've yet to give the downscan a good test because i've been fishing some shallow water with little cover, but the sonar has been working great.  last night i was out and paddling back from fishing when i ran across what will be my new offshore spot on this small lake i've just started fishing.  the sonar really picked up this sharp 9 ft depth change right off center of the middle of the lake, deepest point so far is like 20 feet so this 9 ft swing is killer.  but that sonar really is better than my old unit, no comparison.  it is also VERY easy to toggle between the different screens (sonar, DSI, sonar/DSI vertical, sonar/DSI horizontal.  for the $200 i paid for it i am very happy so far.
