I am hoping to get some great responses on some KC (Kansas) area fishing spots for shore bound anglers, a few buddies and I are getting together this weekend for a little outing. Any suggestions?

If you find a good bank fishing spot in the KC area that isn't private, let me know!

Good luck.  Here's my suggestion.   A few guys - bank bound - restricted to public waters = a change in species & approach.  I'd rig up for catfish and go to Smithville, fish one of the main lake points that you can walk to.

Over the past few years there have been a few threads about how to gain access to private fisheries.

The gist of these threads involve first locating a given body of water, through word of mouth, Google, whatever.  Find out who owns it - this generally involves a trip to the courthouse,  not always though.  Then use whatever people skills you got to get permission to fish.

In my experiences, the best private fishing spots generally belong to rich people, who for the most part don't care that you don't have a good place to go fishing.  You have to be creative talking to these people.

Back when I was bank bound - mid 70's through mid 80's, I had lots of different places to go fishing.  Gaining access to each place was a different and unique negotiation.  It always started with a recommendation from a friend of a friend of a friend.  I had very little luck with cold calls.

James A Reed isn't exactly great fishing, but it is easily accessible from shore. Pretty highly pressured, though.

Like fishes in Trees said, there are some main lake points on Smithville that could be easily accessed from shore.

Used to be a bank fisherman and James a Reed is the place to go. I think they have 10 to 15 body's of water ranging from ponds to small lakes. My favorite were bordarc and catlaw. I have only fished there once this year, but the day I went I smoked the little ones. I think I caught like 30+ in a few hours, but only a couple of them were over 2 pounds.

Seriously almost nothing for bank fishing in the KC area on the Kansas side. You have a couple decent options on the Missouri side but even those are just okay on their best days. Kill Creek has good shoreline access, but you have to buy a JOCO permit to fish it, same with Shawnee Mission and Heritage parks.

I guess knowing what you're hoping for would help a little? If you just want to catch some fish or if you're hoping for lots of fish, a shot at a big fish, whatever. Only thing that's very good to bank fish in the KC area on the KS side is trying to catch a big catfish on the KS river. You could look at a FISH atlas but I've fished most all the ponds on the list and most of the SUCK! Like I don't even think there's bass in them kind of bad. The ones that do have bass have so few it's a complete waste of time to fish them. I guess if I was going to suggest one it would probably be Springhill City Lake but you'd better be ready to get wet because you have to wade past 20' of water willows to get to the open water, and you're not supposed to wade in the lake according to the sign but I've never had anyone say anything to me. You're not going to set the world on fire out there but usually the ones you catch are solid to big fish.

Surprised no one said Cedar Creek!!!! I have done well from the bank on the South side near the dam and under the bridge. Also you can walk the dam at Clinton Lake

You can catch a few in Lake Lenexa also.  Most will be dinks.  You can kill the bluegill/sunfish/rock bass (or whatever you call them) there with crawlers for about an hour before dark.  I've caught some nice bass there from my kayak out of the brush, usually after dark.

There's some lunkers in the tank at Bass Pro in Olathe. Shawnee Mission Park has produced from shore for me in the past (3# lm, 9# wiper) but it took lots of trips.

Too many good places in the Wichita area, unless you just happen to be going to KC.
