Hi All,

A check came in from a commercial client of mine today.  Most of it went back to my business, but I decided to treat myself:

... and a casting rod...

(They had this in pistol grip... yay!  I hope I like it!)

Dude, that's all I fish!  Modified 5000 and 5500 reels with a definite preference for pistol grips.

Gotta remember, I'm 36, and I've been fishing since 1979 or so.  Dad would sit me down on a river rock and go wading while I fished with a bobber.

My first baitcaster was his old 5000 that he installed fast gears (23 IPT) into.  It's still in my lineup.  My other baitcasting reels are modified 5000 and 5000c reels, with a 5500 on the way.

I have the black reel (5000c, fast gears) mounted to a Daiwa Jupiter medium rod and it balances fairly nicely, but man, the MH rod of the same design just doesn't feel right.  It feels heavier than MH.

Mostly, though, nothing but a pistol grip and round reel feel right.

36....You're practically an old man....lol. Just kidding. I have several of the old round reel, pistol grip combos. Never use them anymore. They are just part of my man cave collection. 5000's, 5000c's, 4500's, 5500's. I have a silver 5500c with gold accents. It was their anniversary edition. It is still in the box, never been used. Bought it around mid to late 80's. I'll try to get a photo up later today.

Well you are not to far off from me since I am 31. I fished forever but then stopped in my late teens till my later 20's. I was a kid like maybe 10 and someone would ask what I wanted for my birthday and the answer was always $ so I can buy fishing stuff. LOL That's kinda messed up for a little kid to say they want fishing stuff over toys or whatever it is. I did rock a Zebco Rhino way back in the day and that thing was a casting master but that is relative to what I knew or saw back then. I always used spinning gear though or fly rods. I started using spinning at probably around 6 or 7 and I would say around 10 or so with fly rods. Back then I just fished to catch anything I could. Didn't matter if it was bluegill rockbass crappie or whatever. I used tons of little grubs with like a 1/16 or 1/32 head beetle spins those crappy little wooden poppers then sell in the round cases split shots come in. Those things actually tear up some panfish on a UL. I also use to fish at this pond with a guy who tied his own floating water spiders and those things were absolutely amazing. He is the one he even got me into wanting to learn to use a fly rod just because those things tore it up so much. Even big bass would hit those things and I caught multiple in the 3-5# range on those spiders.
