acmintun Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Ok, let me line this out as simply as possible. I am a a new father, 3 year old and 10 month old, 27 years old, and recently re-enrolled in college so basically I am as close to broke as possible. Annnnnyyyyywayyyyyysss, I was using a Quantum ql1000 that a neighbor gave me, basically a $10 made in korea baitcasting nightmare! The Quantum reel has finally died on me. It is literally unusable, the magnetic brake doesn't work and there is no sweet spot for the drag, so flipping, pitching, and casting in general has been the single hardest thing I've ever done. I need a new reel, and I am fine with using whatever rod came with the reel. So I need to know what the best bang for your buck reel out there is for a combination of jig and spinnerbait fishing is. So anything that works great while being ridiculously cheap lol, and then hopefully I can save up and get that new reel, after an engagement ring. So like the post says what is your best suggestion out there, thanks guys. Quote
Arv Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 How cheap are you talking? I think one of the best bang for your buck combos out there is the bps pq/carbonlite combo, but that's at ~160. I don't know if that's inexpensive by your standards. Nothing wrong if it is or isn't. Just saying that a price point will allow for better input. Quote
acmintun Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 I think that pricepoint is too right for my blood at the moment. I would say definitely under $100 I mainly fish jigs so we can focus around setups for those Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 hard to beat BPS Pro Qualifiers. Esp used in the forum for $60 http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/143899-bass-pro-qualifiers-x3/ mine are going strong 4 seasons in but my records aren't jack compared to goose52's http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/94972-bps-pro-qualifier-bc-reel-%E2%80%93-5-year-challenge-%E2%80%93-interim-report/. Tim Kelly Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Assuming you can still use the rod you have look out for a used Curado B series on ebay or one of the forum's for sale boards. I bet you could find one for about $40 and they're strong little reels that just keep going and are repairable, which in house brands may not be. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 3, 2014 Super User Posted September 3, 2014 I see you are using a RH reel. Is it what you prefer? What power/action is the rod? What weights do you normally use? Maybe I can help you. Quote
papajoe222 Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Welcome to the board. I feel your pain and can understand your situation as I was In a very similar state years ago. If finances won't permit your purchasing a decent reel, may I suggest borrowing one from a family member or friend until your situation improves. It sounds like you won't have much time for fishing in the near future. Just a suggestion. I sent you a PM. Check it out. Quote
acmintun Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 I'm mainly throwing jigs 3/8ths and 1/2oz. I'm not quite comfortable with the bigger jigs yet but jigs are definitely something that I spend a lot of time on because I'm still learning. I throw spinnerbaits and some weightless soft plastic but mainly jigs. I'm not really sure if I prefer a rh reel. It was just the only thing available and I didn't even think about changing, if I get the chance to try it I will. I think the rod is a medium-heavy with moderate action Quote
acmintun Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 Any ideas "I love bass fishing"? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 3, 2014 Super User Posted September 3, 2014 Which hand would you rather reel with? It is also important which hand you would prefer to work the rod with. A few can only reel with one hand. A few can only work a rod with one arm. Most can learn to use either. I have a good idea for you, but am looking for a bit more information first. Quote
NathanW Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 As said find a used Shimano Bantam Curado on Ebay. These reals will be around forever and will continue to outperform anything you can find off the shelf for under $80.00. Available in left or Right. Quote

I agree, it's a mute point if everyone is suggesting reels outta you're current range, you will get exacting information with a price point. Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 6, 2014 Super User Posted September 6, 2014 Have you found a reel? Josh He received a Trion from me today and has already caught a fish with it. It is one Mike cleaned for me and installed a Carbontex drag. It was used twice by me after Mike went through it. I've never sold a reel, and wouldn't have sold this one either as I like the Trions I have, but I am willing to help a deserving person when I can. I felt Aaron was such a person. He seems to like it, too. 1 Quote
einscodek Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Ya for baitcasters I'd not cheap out on a reel..find the better models like a curado on eBay used rather than buy an inadequately lower model new. Quote

Couldn't agree more. A carbon framed reel may be good at first, but how long will it stay that way if fishing jigs 80% of the time and with the possibility of hooking some nice size fish. I've read of guys damaging this kind of reel on a hookset. My hooksets wouldn't, but then I am a pansy with my hooksets. Quote
