CarolinaBoy4Life Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Looking to get a top water rod. Gonna be throwing Strike King KVD Sexy Dawg's and D&M buzzbaits mainly. Was looking at getting a 7' Med Moderate action rod. Any input or suggestions on other rod specs you prefer for topwater? Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted September 2, 2014 Super User Posted September 2, 2014 I prefer a MH rod with a fast action, one with a little softer tip. I don't want to have to work through all the rod flex to impart action on the bait. Buzzbaits are a single hook bait, that need a rod with the ability to drive a single hook through the roof of the mouth or a gill plate at a good distance, I am a fan of moderate and moderate fast action rods but not for this particular situation. Super User gulfcaptain Posted September 2, 2014 Super User Posted September 2, 2014 MH X2 with the fast action. 1 Quote
JGBassinAL Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I personally throw a spook and a buzzbait on two separate rods. I throw a spook on a 7ft MH glass rod with a moderate tip and I throw buzzbaits on a 7'3" heavy glass rod with a moderate tip. I throw braid with the spook and fluoro with the buzzbait. I also throw hollow bodied swimbaits and chatterbaits on the 7'3" heavy glass rod and I love it. I have not lost a fish since switching over to these two setups. I know a lot of people wouldn't throw a swimbait on a glass rod, but if more people would try it they would love it. I hooked a 7 lber on a shadalicious from 30 yards away with the glass rod. The tip isn't super whippy because it is a heavy power rod so it drives the hook well, and the extra bend over a fast action rod keeps the fish pinned a lot better. I actually throw my spinnerbaits on a glass rod as well. The only things I throw on a graphite rod are texas rig, jig, and carolina rig. 2 Quote
TorqueConverter Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I'd rather use their MH power Crankin Stick than a carbon lite for topwater. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted September 3, 2014 Super User Posted September 3, 2014 I'll agree with the above. I don't like a moderate action for topwater baits. Get a fast action rod. If you're throwing 5/8 to 3/4 oz lures, get a MH. Or if you're fishing around heavy cover (thick weeds, wood, etc), get a MH. 1 Quote
Preytorien Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I use a Carbonlite Heavy/Fast rod for froggin, buzzbaits, spooks, poppers, etc. I love it. 1 Quote
CarolinaBoy4Life Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 I appreciate the information guy's. Never really thrown topwater so needed the input. I'm gonna go with a 7' MH F rod. Quote

I have actually been using glass rods for a lot of those same things for quite a long while now. I am positive that my hookup ratio has also increased because of it. Some days I would start to wonder how it is even possible that I never got a hook in that fish even though they totally slam right into it. Sometimes it would happen to me constantly with things like buzz frogs or well basically any moving bait. They hit it so hard its jarring and they feel that impact just like you.The glass rods give you more time to react when you get that hit and the fish really inhale the bait better . Get some braided line and a glass rods and its on for any moving bait. It is the same principal pretty much as why you would use a glass rod for cranking. I almost never ever miss fish anymore on buzz stuff or small swimbaits when I use a glass rod Quote
