Your Deep Diver Rod?

Just curious what rods you guys use. I went out with my grandpa and decided to throw one of his SK 10xd and that thing pulled like a freakin fish. I was using a mh falcon cara and I was pretty worn out after using it for a few hours! Do any of you guys use heavy rods for this application?

I use a 8' croix eyecon trolling rod, works just fine, has a nice moderate action

I use my c-rig rod for the mag deep divers.  It 7'6" HF and rated to 2oz but has a fairly soft tip.  Those baits are too heavy for standard cranking rods.

Yea man.... Gotta upsize those rods and even reels for those Godzilla crankbaits! 10xd is a massive crank, not a fan myself.

I use a St. Croix Mojo Big Crankster (7' 8" MH/M) for my deep cranks. I've never fished a 10XD but it fishes the 6XD very easily.

Dobyns Champion 805cbrm, best rod I've thrown for large deep divers.  If you're fishing the new largest of the large cranks, the 806cb is awesome.

Yep, I throw 10xds all the time. I love my dobyns 805cb. Handles them really good. I ordered a 806cb to try out too. I have some of the lucky craft mag cranks and they are bigger than the 10xds so I'll be using hose on the 806cb.

By the way, cabelas has 10xd for $4.99 right now! I ordered $175 worth last night lol

I use a Phenix X11 composite rod.

I got that specificly for the BR roadtrip we had in April as we were on Wilson Lake which I was told is a very deep lake and to bring every deep diving crank bait I had.

I live in Fla so fishing a deep lake was totally new to me.

Its max lure rating is 3 oz but I have no problem useing it for shallow cranks, traps, sq bills etc.

Seems like an odd choice for 10XD's. Or did you just not read the question?

I use a Dobyns Champion 7'6" HF that I trimmed down to 7'2". Took four inches off the but, not the tip.

 

The rod is pretty much useless for anything else, and was even worse before I trimmed it, so it get used for big cranks.

Fenwick Elite Tech 7'3'' H Fast.  This is actually made for heavy and deep jigs/softplastic but it works great for deep cranks.  It does a great job of setting the hook on anything deep.  It has plenty of power and the sensitivity is good.

Dobyns glass 765. That thing handles 6xds no problem. For the 10xd, I would go even longer and stronger. 805 or 806 champ

Abu Garcia has a new heavy action winch rod out with the Veritas 2.0, 7'11" rated up to 2-1/4oz lure weight. This would work great if you're trying to keep it $100 or less. It is what I plan on getting if I feel the need to go out throwing some 10xds. I have the 7'6" mh already, works great up to 6xds and I haven't had any issue at all.

The lure slightly exceeds the rods rating, but if you lob the 10XD it will

work just fine and you can cast this lure a country mile! On the other hand,

I prefer longlining the lure and trolling.

Your problem was more than likely the reel more than the rod. A round reel like Shimono Calcutta, Cardiff or larger diameter spool like E300 series Curado combined with a good cranking rod and you in business with deep diving crank baits. Deep diving crank baits with the right stuff is still a lot of work.

Cool, I have the 7'6" version and it seems like it would be too light for the big baits, I haven't tried it though. The 705r was designed for ripping traps out of grass, so it is a little more powerful than the 765 I have.

I personally throw mine on a 7'6" Heavy glass rod with a moderate tip and it is awesome for the 10XD. I throw the 6XD on a 7'10" Medium Heavy glass rod with a moderate tip and it works wonders as well. I didn't bring my crankin rods with me this past weekend and the buddy I fished with had a 10XD on an 805CBRM and an 806CBRM and I threw both of them. The 806 definitely handles the 10XD better, but it wasn't a strain to throw it on the 805CBRM, plus the 805CBRM is awesome for Spro deep divers if you like to throw those as well. The 805CBRM would be a better choice if you are going to throw a lot of Spros and 6XDs along with the 10XD. I will say though that since the 10XD came out, I rarely throw a Spro or a 6XD unless I'm fishing in the 10ft range. You can make a fish eat a 10XD just as well as a 6XD, or at least I can. I don't find myself catching less fish and I'm also catching bigger fish since I started throwing the 10XD all the time. Supposedly Strike King is coming out with an 8XD as well

If specifically throwing the larger sized 25ft+ cranks that are now gaining popularity, the 806CB is definitely the rod. I throw them on my 805CB but it becomes a workout. 805CB for everything else in that 18-22ft range, it's absolutely amazing.
