hoosierbass07 Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I was at the local Gander Mountain this evening and noticed they had in some Fenwick HMX rods. Last winter I bought a Fenwick medium HMG spinning rod and I've come to really enjoy using it. It's light and very nice looking and works good for what I mostly throw, soft plastics. I paid around $100 plus shipping for it online. Anyway, Gander Mountain has the HMX rods around $80.00 I'm in the market for a nice medium heavy spinning rod and also a a nice medium baitcasting rod. I looked at the HMX medium heavy spinning rod and it looked nice. I was wondering if anybody here have used the HMX rods and if they are as good as the HMG rods. So far I've been happy with my HMG rod. I don't fish in heavy weeds or anything, mostly open water bass fishing. I'm wanting to add a medium heavy spinning rod to my collection and I was thinking of going after the St. Croix Mojo bass rod. But if the HMX rod is of decent quality I might consider that one and it's cheaper too - Mojo bass is around $119 and HMX is around $80.00 Thanks! Quote
hatrix Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I actually just bought the 7' M/H HMG not to long ago and I really like it. It was actually a really stiff rod and thats why I liked it. I use it for light plastics in weeds or small frogs and such that just is not always suited for a casting rod. It also was like one of the only rods at my tackle store that had a full front cork and that is a HUGE selling point for me with spinning rods. The only down side is the cork on it seems to just suck any moisture out of my hands from holding it but it looks nice . I would just pay the extra $10 and get another HMG. Or you can go all out and get a elite tech for $40 more. Those are like the Pflueger President of spinning rods if you get what I mean. Personally I don't care for mojo anything and there is always something better you could get then a mojo for the same price or less. They do have the good hook keepers though! Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted September 2, 2014 Super User Posted September 2, 2014 Another Vote for Fenwick... I used Croix's SC2 blends in the mid 90's... Ok then but something's changed and the Fenwick is back in a very good way.... Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 2, 2014 Super User Posted September 2, 2014 I've become a fan of Fenwick as well. Can't help with the HMX. My newer Fenwicks are the Smallmouth and Aetos. I do have 3 older Fenwicks, but none are the HMX. I've handled the Mojo in the store, but just can't get excited about it. Last time I was at Cabela's I looked at the Fenwick Eagle GT rods, and liked their looks better than the Mojo. Just personal preference. Others love the Mojo. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted September 2, 2014 Super User Posted September 2, 2014 I own a 7' MH HMG and a 6'10" MH HMX, both in spinning. I bought the HMG first and I really liked it, so then I ordered the HMX because I really liked the handle on it better, and it was $10 cheaper. I must say that the HMX is a fair bit heavier, and I don't like the guides as much either. If I had to make my purchase over again, I'd get another HMG. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 If you can afford an ET smallmouth I would go with that. Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 Are the Smallmouth rods strong enough for Large Mouth bass? Quote

My brother had a Eagle GT but he rolled it up in the back window and snapped the tip off. Well he got that fixed and then shut the back hatch on the handle like a week later and the rod was done. It wasn't a bad rod but it did have the all metal guides with no inserts on it. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted September 3, 2014 Super User Posted September 3, 2014 Are the Smallmouth rods strong enough for Large Mouth bass? Is that a serious question? Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 Is that a serious question? Yeah. I've not fished for smallmouth bass yet. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted September 3, 2014 Super User Posted September 3, 2014 Are the Smallmouth rods strong enough for Large Mouth bass? Smallmouths are generally considered better fighters than a Largemouth....so yeah. Rod designations don't mean a whole lot. However, it is my understanding that the Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth series was developed specifically for Smallmouth river fishing. Which is why you don't see any punching rods in the line. I would have no problem fishing for other species such as catfish with most of the rods I use for Largemouths. I wouldn't want to use a ML as some catfish get rather large even in my area. I'd even use them in saltwater for smaller species. Quite sure I wouldn't go after tuna with one, tho. Quote
Smallmouth Hunter Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Ignore the smallmouth part of the name... Feel better? Lol They only named it elite tech smallmouth because the rods in the series are the generally popular power/actions that smallmouth fisherman prefer. It doesn't mean a MH is closer to other rods M power or anything like that. Just different rod models more suitable for smallie fisherman. 1 Quote
sofarfrome Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I have the HMX medium rod with a Pfleuger reel and I love it. I use it for salmon, browns, and steelies in and around lake ontario and love it. I would not trade it for anything. However if someone wanted to GIVE me a...oh well, never mind. This rig is the real deal. Quote
desmobob Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I bought an HMX spinning rod last year to bring on my annual Cape Cod striper fishing trip. My buddies there recommended the Falcon Low Rider, but I wanted a two-piece rod (and didn't want to have the exact same gear as most of the other guys) so I tried an HMX. I put a Diawa Tournament SS 1300 on it and it is a great rod for inshore striper fishing and largemouth fishing. I don't own any high-end spinning rods to compare it to, but I think I may prefer it to my my TFO Gary Loomis Signature spinning rod in a similar length and action. Tight lines, Bob Quote
