OK recently I went fishing with someone who through bassresource has said they had an open spot. So I asked and we went fishing. I had a great trip but this being my first time doing that I don't no if it is common courtesy to help pay for the gas and what not? Help I don't want to be that guy.

Offer whatever you can afford and feel comfortable with..lunch..money...drinks and snacks..whatever works.

So your saying I should have pitched in on something

Always offer to help the person who has the boat. Weather it's gas or snacks, always help.  I normally will pay for half if not more.  But like the above statement offer whatever you can afford or feel comfortable with.  It will pay off in the long run for sure.

Dam well I guess I owe him some money

Next time offer without even asking and he will be good.  And you can always tell him sorry you were short on funds or forgot to bring some with you and give him a bit more.  That way you don't feel bad.

Owning a boat and maintenance of a boat and tow vehicle is very expensive, I always offer money or if I don't have money for gas make sure it's known well in advance (not when someone shows up at my house to go fishing in the morning).

That said, you went with my brother in law who isn't one I've ever known to get too bent out of shape about the deal because he was going anyways. If you want to offer to make yourself feel better about it you can do that. Just buy Chris some Dairy Queen ice cream next time and he'll forgive you for anything  :laugh5:

Always offer.

Some guys will say thanks but no thanks while others will jump at the bills.

Different strokes for different folks.

At least you offered.

Not saying you would do this but if you do offer some money, make it sufficient to not seem like an empty or pathetic gesture.

Alright thanks blue bass that makes me feel a lot better, I'd never gone fishing with someone I don't no before but I had a great time I just never even considered that maybe it would be decent to offer to pay for something

Personally, I would take a guy who is fun to talk to, can back a trailer, and can hop on the trolling motor while I am retying over a guy who pays any day!

Now, if we're talking a 2 hour drive to the lake and then some long runs on the lake, chipping in $20 might be appreciated. For just a normal trip to a local lake what I said above holds true.

i always offer.  some guys take it, some don't.  if they don't take it....then i "forget" a $10 or $20 on their truck seat for them to find after i leave.

i always appreciate them asking me to go and don't expect them to absorb all the costs associated.

sounds like this was your first time. and you thought about it afterwards.  so, you are ok...

and you got the "all is ok" from his brother in-law.  i'll bet the fact that you kinda feel bad about it now, will get back to him and he'll ask you to go again...and you can take care of things then.  sounds like its all good.

dude the fact that you thought about it and said you didn't want to be that guy shows you genuinely didn't know to do so....  nobody can beat you up over that.  But being a jayhawks fan, i mean it really doesn't surprise me that you don't know any better :laugh5:

no in all seriousness, bluebasser is a good dude, and i'm sure he will relay your intentions to his brother in law.  That said, you just make it up to him next time.  Perhaps even step it up a notch and just bring you a little cooler with sodas, ice and some snacks, offer to pay some gas money.  Then take bluebasser's advice and smash some DQ, that's really a win for both parties....

by the way, take Roy Williams back, you can have him

-sincerely every UNC fan

I have a couple of buddies that I fish with.  We alternate boats and no money changes hands.  However, the "guest" brings the lunch and drinks.  In addition, the guest writes up a report on the day and posts it to all of us via the private message system on the forum.  In addition to the "catering", the guest also provides the valet service.  They take the rig to the parking lot, and then get it when it's time to go.

Don't assign anyone the valet detail unless you know that they know what they are doing.

We have "The Al Lindner Award" for each outing.  It goes to the angler who hooks up with the most species.

That is always good for a laugh.  We quibble over such things as, do snagged mussels count as a species?  After all, it is a shellfish.  I snagged a duck that was flying by, and tried to claim it as a species because it's a waterfowl.  The possibilities are endless.

If I invite someone and they ask what they can do, I'll assign them the lunch detail.  I don't expect them to share expenses because they are invited.

What's up guys, it's been a while and yes I agree with comments on this blog about boat expense (everything related to it). Offer even if he doesn't take it, can't lose that way and it shows good faith.

Posted

if your with a guy that you know is more experienced its always good to let him know this or ask questions. its not about going out to fish in a boat its about catching fish out of a boat and it makes the trip way more fun! you don't even have to throw the same thing as what the boater or other guys throwing thats catching fish there are tons of other imitations of what that guy is mimicking too try something in that category or just ask if they are eating that what else would they eat or what ever! and some times what they are throwing is the best thing but sometimes it isnt and ive learned alot as a non boat in that regards to! all im saying is it sucks to watch the guy in the back of the boat not catch anything and i try and do what i can and off what ever i got to help get fish on both sides of the boat! thats how blue helped me and i like to return the favor and anytime i can learn from they guy in the back i do! you can never know it all and some times we forget the simple things work too!

an dont play with ice cream infront of me ive killed for less!

Hey Chris, I was mentioning to Blue that next year I am considering fishing tournaments at Stockton and he says you fish Stockton a lot. Do you fish it leisurely or do you do tournaments? if I need to start a new blog on this topic, happy to do so
