FirstnameLastname Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 Are wacky rigs all that effective? They look like they have a lot of action but at what cost? They look like they snag easier, are harder to set the hook with, and get torn up quicker. Do you all have any experience with them? Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 I've never cared for the wacky rig... I'd rather fish the Texas rig over wacky in almost any circumstance. But I can skip a wacky rigged stick bait a pretty good ways even though I suck at skipping lures. Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 Man there are weedless hooks available. Quote
Jay Ell Gee Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 While wacky rigging soft plastic worms do tear them up fairly easily, it's really not that bad. The worm gets an increased action and, in my opinion, a better hookup ratio than Texas rigging. Owner weedless wacky hooks help a lot with snagging. I have been experimenting with the o-rings for senko type lures and my hookups have been about the same. Bass Pro Stik-O's come 15 to a pack, so I don't worry about tearing one up here or there. NathanW Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 The hook up ratio is a whole lot better and it sinks a little more vertically than T-rigging. If I am fishing grass in crystal clear water I will Wacky rig using 6# test as setting the hook on a T-rig with this light of line will cause a few lost fish. 8 times out of 10 however I would rather have a T-Rig on. Setting the hook on T-Rig/Jig is just way too much fun. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 28, 2014 Global Moderator Posted August 28, 2014 If you fish tournaments in the spring around here and you aren't using a wacky rig you're donating your money. It's an open hook and fairly light line, it's not meant for snaggy areas. If you need it keep it more snag free, then get one of the weedless wacky hooks. Probably one of the easiest rigs there are to fish and hook up with though. They do tear up easy, but it catches tons of fish at times too. 2 Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 I never use a weightless wacky rig, but a 1/16 oz wacky jighead with a 5" senko catch a ridiculous number of fish in the gin clear lakes around here before the summer heat hits and pushes the fish deep. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 Wacky rigging has accounted for a lot of big smallmouth and largemouth bass for us over the years. You can save your baits quite easily using this rigging technique I posted quite a while ago: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/9471-wacky-rigging-my-way/ Quote
PersicoTrotaVA Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I pull wacky rigs through cover all the time. They make weedless hooks. As a matter of fact I caught 1 yesterday bouncing it through sticks. Yes I lose plastics left and right but that's because I am too lazy to secure them with a rubberband or o ring. Quote
BuckMaxx Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I can't tell you the last time I hooked a finesse or stick worm traditional. I am going this weekend to try a small Colorado blade screwed into each end of a wacky senko. looks stupid but might just look stupid enough to work. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 Are wacky rigs all that effective? They look like they have a lot of action but at what cost? They look like they snag easier, are harder to set the hook with, and get torn up quicker. Do you all have any experience with them? Wacky is one of the, if not THE, most effective rig I've ever used. And I use it all the time. Never go out without at least one of my rods rigged wacky. Sometimes it's all I throw. If you search the forum(s) here, you'll find a TON of information about wacky rigs. If I'm fishing areas that do not have a ton of snaggy spots, I'll throw a regular Gamakatsu splitshot/dropshot or Wide Gap Finesse hook. If I'm fishing cover, I use a weedless variety of the same hooks. In fact, i've taken to make my own weedless hooks now and they work phenomenally. As for losing worms, yes, you can/will lose worms, but in the forums you'll find a lot of how-to for rigging. There's heat shrink solutions, among many others. I've never had issue with setting hooks on wacky rigs. In fact, fish are almost always hooked in the upper 'lip'. Just reel down and lift the rod. No herky jerky rip the mouth hook sets are needed. Super User F14A-B Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 Depending on What plastic you use? 20 zoom trick worms, are often on sale/ clearance sometimes buy one get one free.. I get them on average about $2.90 a bag....soft plastics tear/ always have.... Senkos? @ over $8 a bag? Yea, that could sting... But there are very good alternatives avail.. Plenty of Rigging methods and open hook rigs are always easier on hook penetration / light line fishing. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 Wacky rigs are deadly!!They do pick up a little more grass and get hung up slightly more than a Texas Rig, but the setup I use is pretty good with that though. I use a 2/0 Trokar Weedless Wacky Worm Hook if I'm using a 4" or 5" bait. 98% of the time I Wacky Rig with a 4" Yum Dinger. With the 4" Dinger, I use a 1/32 oz. Eco Pro Tungsten Pro Wacky Weight. It really helps to increase the durability of the bait, keeps it a nice tight package, and also allows me to fish it a little faster than weightless. When I throw the 5" Dinger, I'll bump the weight up to the 1/16 oz version. I'm not afraid to fish it around heavy cover or very grassy areas. Quote
Nelson Wormefeller Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 This summer I started weedless wacky rigging with o-rings, and have been catching bass like crazy. Quote
Super User tcbass Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 This summer I started weedless wacky rigging with o-rings, and have been catching bass like crazy. How many fish per Senko are you getting per O-ring? Quote
