Super User iabass8 Posted August 27, 2014 Super User Posted August 27, 2014 I'm looking for a rod that would be the equal in power or a little more(no less) to the dobyns dx745. Its use will be 3/8 to 3/4 jigs with 1/2oz being used 85% of the time. Fishing mississippi river so lots of wood /brush\pulling fish out of some wood but not knarly stuff. and 20# fluoro. I want at least a 7'3+. Thinking 894 or 873? Open to all suggestions. I'm leaning towards the 894 but just need some assurance I'm getting the right one. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 IMO, you are thinking correct, the 3 power NRX is good up to a total weight of about 1/2oz, and then it seems to me to be a little more loaded than what I prefer. 4 power should be great for what you are describing. Quote
Super User Master Bait'r Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 I'd say 854 would be perfect but you'd have to sacrifice that inch or two. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 I have been fishing the NRX 873 for about a year and really love the rod. It is a very good rod for both jigs and heavy Texas Rigs in addition to its designed use of Carolina Rigs. The rod is difficult to understand given its somewhat deceiving 3 power rating. However I was told by several trusted guys before I bought the rod that it is about a 4.5 powered rod on the Loomis scale. To be honest I rarely put a 3/4 oz jig on the rod but I do throw ALOT of 1/2 oz jigs plus larger trailers which will put the bait close to 3/4 oz total. It fishes them just fine. On the lighter side I have thrown Northstar 3/8 oz hair jigs with finesse trailers and they fished very well on there and casting distance was very good. I don't have any personal experience with the 894 though I would suspect it would be similar to the 873 CRR. I also don't own the DX745 though I have several other DX casting rods... 703 and 742 plus a Savvy 735. Get a rep sample NRX. Also the rod will likely blow the DX rods out of the water in casting distance and sensitivity... at least it did for me. Quote
Diggy Posted August 28, 2014 Posted August 28, 2014 I have the 894c. It fishes 1/2-3/4th no probs Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 28, 2014 Super User Posted August 28, 2014 If the rod is primary for jigs, then go with the 4 power, worms the 3 power. you can use the 4 power for both worms and jigs, just doesn't cast as easily as the 3 power. My suggestion is put a reel on both and see how the rod feels to you before buying a rod. Tom Quote
