jonnyblazex Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Cheap piece of junk IMO. Save up a little more, and you can have a much better setup. If you could save $125-150, you could buy a very nice sensative setup, such as a pflueger president or shimano Sedona reel ($50) and a *** *** rod ($99). This setup for spinning would be very very nice compared to that combo. I know that not everyone has a money tree, me included. But I have learned in the past that cheap combos never pay off, and you will be better off matching up your own combos, and will be 10x better, and last for years if you don't beat on your equipment. Hootie Sometimes we (just me?) don't think to check a poster's profile. I had no money at 14 for anything, and when I did start working summers, I used the money on school clothes so my parents wouldn't have to. I have to agree.....buy what you can afford....then get out there and enjoy yourself. I caught many fish on a junk rod and Mitchell 300 in my youth. Like another poster said...concentrate on your education, then spend hundreds on good gear after you get that high paying job. 1 Quote

Super User Choporoz Posted August 27, 2014 Super User Posted August 27, 2014 I bought two $50 Quantum spinning combos for the wife and I two years ago. We were on a trip and needed something for a couple weeks. We were both very disappointed with them, even for low-budget gear. Neither reel lasted a year and one rod broke within that year. The action felt good in the store, but quickly started grinding and the bails stopped closing on their own. I wish I knew the exact model, but they were largely red reels with silver accents. I see two combos on Walmart that are near your price point that I would recommend far and away before the Quantum: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Abu-Garcia-Cardinal-STX-Spinning-Combo/23608392 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mitchell-308-Spinning-Combo/35739195 I always hate when people give recommendations outside the price range being requested. But, I feel pretty strongly that the extra 10 or 11 dollars for one of those two combos is going to buy you MUCH more satisfaction, a rod that has tons more feel, and a reel that will last twice as long. I have used Cardinals and low/med Mitchells for many, many years and still have one of each in my car right now. Quote
kikstand454 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 With all due respect, if you're not closing your bail manually, espicially a budget one, then I think I will have to take your advice with a grain of salt. If you're spending $50 on a combo, then that means you're spending $25 for a rod and $25 for a reel. If it lasts a year of use, I would say you not only got your moneys worth, but that's about what you should've expected to begin with. Shimano and Abu and daiwa all have complete garbage at that price point as well. So the brand snipe is unwarrented. OP if that's what you can afford, and what feels good in your hand- then get it and get out there and fish! Set your drag correctly, close your bail EVERYTIME with your hand, and don't just throw it around in your vehicle. It will last just fine. Quote

See if you can maybe find somewhere local to look for a used set up? It may take a little patience but I know when I was young I got some great deals on stuff just because people saw that I was excited to fish! I hope this helps and as others have said, just go fishing an have a LOT of fun! Quote
