So I cleaned a few reels the other day that needed some love. One of them was a old PQ of my brothers and one of my lews tournament's I have not fished in a while. Well for some reason just these 2 reels seem to have play in and out with the handle after all was done. None of my other reels have this issue but only these 2. I also noticed that basically they are the same reel when you take them apart except the PQ is just lesser quality on things like drag ect. They also seemed a bit "geary" when turning the handle. I contribute this to maybe being because of the play in the handle. I use very minimal grease and oil on my reels and would rather not pack them with grease to get rid of the feeling.

I had some play in my reel and I just took it apart and added more metal washers onto the handle axel

these are ultrathin metal washers but if you can find the exact size then that may solve yer clearance issues

Interesting, I would try taking them apart and getting a copy of the schematics and making sure every washer is exactly where it needs to be. Good luck man

I had a similar issue once and apparently when I reassembled the reel I didn't tighten the drag star enough before installing the handle.

More reels suffer from what you describe than you might think. Adding a shim in the right spot will help, It's not super critical though. What you observed in similarities is to be expected among PQ, Lews, ABU, Pflueger as they all come out of the same factory.

OK, I give up, what is PQ?

Well that was kind of vague DVT :) what is the right spot? Should I just toss some extra washers on the handle for fix the issue. Does that play in the handle also have anything to do with the feeling of gears when you turn the handle?

I also noticed that I thought was funny in the PQ is that they used a right handed anti reverse and just put it on backwards so the plastic is facing out. I guess whatever works to cut down there cost.

Really there is only 4 washers if you don't cout the drag washers and they are all correct. There is the spacing washer the )( washers I don't know what to call them :P and the washer for the handle.

The play is in the shaft connection at the frame not at the handle. A very thin washer above the crankshaft bearing might help. Be careful of binding things up. The AR roller clutches aren't right or left hand flipping them over is common practice. Shimano does the same thing. The main gear is driven by the crank shaft so there is a connection, but there are other things in play here. Some reels use an extra drive shaft bearing in the side case and others use a bearing the frame to support the pinion. Shimanos "x-ship" uses a second one inside the side case (Daiwa's bee doing this for a while) all in the name of gear alignment. These extras come with a price too. Like I said in my original post, a lot of reels exhibit a bit of in/out play in the crank shaft, it's always noticed after cleaning mostly because you're paying more attention. Really nothing much to worry about as long as all the parts went back in correctly. The geary feel may just be normal wear. Impossible to tell without seeing it.

That is maybe more geared towards someone who has never taken a reel apart. That doesn't really tell much but those YouTube Videos were the best I have ever seen probably for cleaning a reel. I already fixed the play the 2 reels had anyways but I appreciate the posts. TY

Hello,

On that reel, does the crankshaft ride on a shaft or rod coming up from the brake plate or frame? Or is it solid?

I have no experience with the reels you mentioned and I am no way reel expert. (declaimer)

But with Shimano I have noticed more play on some of them after taken apart and put them back together.

What I found was because the locking cover to keep the drive nut from becoming loose can only set to certain angle of the nut, I was setting the nut too loose. I had to find the happy medium between not too tight but not too loose where the locking piece can still go it. Hope this makes sense. I also found it helpful to tighten the drag a bit to close to where you'll be using before finally deciding how tight the drive shaft nut should be. I play with this a bit and all my reels now feel exactly the way I like.

Not 100% sure this is the same kind of play you are talking about thou.
