$50-$70 Flip And Pitch Rod

Hi all, just looking for an opinion on a rod for flipping and pitching. Currently looking at the Berkley Lightning Shock, Abu Garcia Vengeance, Daiwa Aird and the Lews American Hero Speed Stick. This rod will likely be paired with a Lews American Hero Speed Spool, so im wondering if the American Hero combo will be available in 7' 6" Heavy? If so, that would solve the problem. Open to all suggestions, as long as they are 7'6" H/F or H/XF.

Generation 1 veritas rods can be had for that price. The 7'6 is listed as mh but have no worried as it is a heavy action if I have ever felt one. I mean it is quite stout. My dicks sporting goods has them on clearance for $52 and that is a steal

Go with the older micro guide Veritas for $80. I have the 7' MH and it's fantastic for pitchin' jigs and creatures in light to moderate cover. Heavy cover and big bass calls for the H.

I also picked up a Powell diesel 765 a couple years back, excellent rod for flip/pitch at it's price point. 7'6 med hvy x fast, it seems a slight but more toward the hvy/fast action though IMO. It's a very stout stick for sure. Best bang for the buck rod at under $70 right now.

Ok, a new question. I have a 7'2" MH/XF Crucial. Would I be better off using this for flipping and pitching and buying a new rod for cranks and jerkaits?

Ha! I just bought that rod and it certainly feels more a heavy than a mh. It could probably do the job fine unless you are going into the thickest of thick cover.

If you can score a Veritas in your price range, pull the trigger! Cabelas pro guide bass series are selling for $39.99 + $8 shipping online. Two of my buddies have them and they are rocking rods. They have the pitching rods

#1 Veritas 7'6 mh

#2 Diesel 7'6 mh

The Veritas is a lot lighter and balances pretty well for a rod of that length. It's a tad tip heavy but no where near as much as the diesel. Also the diesel has no warranty at all and abu has great CS and will replace a broken rod hassle free. Both are stouter than their mh rating so don't worry about that.

I have an arid and for $40 dollars it is the best rod I have bought I have a few other rods in the $150 range and it sits up there with them it does seem to have more of a parabolic bend than it says on the rod

That probably depends on how gnarly the stuff you tend to flip in is, and how badly you need a rod for cranks/jerks? I'm not super familiar with the action of the Crucial you speak of. I am relatively certain it would be a perfectly fine pitching and "light" flipping rod. Some would argue no rod is really great at pitching AND "heavy" flipping. I tend to agree, but if you are like me, you can't afford to specialize that much.

I'm looking to upgrade my rod for short-range, heavy cover work as well. I just have to talk myself out of that Megabass Drop Shot rod so I have the funds to buy other, more practical things.

If the MH Crucial tip is indeed an XF, then I have to assume it would be a poor selection as a crankbait rod.  Any true MHXF is going to be too stiff for treble hook use.  I suppose you could go very light on the drag and get away with using treble hooks, but why not use it for something along the lines it was designed for?

 

I fish treble lures on a MF all the time, but obviously they don't have the power of a MHF rod.  (I don't fish Veritas or St. Croix, but a MF in those lines wouldn't be my first...or second...choice for treble hook lures based on my limited experience with Abu rods, and what I have read about St. Croix rods being under-rated.)

Either gandermountain or cabelas has veritas casting rods for $39 right now or at least they did earlier.. Jump on that deal.

Normally a mh/xf is not what you would want to throw topwaters or jerkbaits on. That would make a great worm/jig rod. There's also no set rules for what has to be thrown on what. If it works for you then by all means go for it but there are better rods for that technique.

When I first answered this, I hadn't even considered you might be using the Crucial as your cranks/jerks rod. If that's the case, you need a new cranks/jerks rod more than you do a new flip/pitch rod. The Crucial is better suited for the latter than the former.

Thats just it, I have been using my Crucial for everything. I actually havent lost a fish yet using treble hook lures, which apparently should be suprising. The lake I fish on doesnt have a ton of heavy cover, I will mostly be using the rod for fishing around docks. The crucial is a worm and jig series, so I suppose I should use that for its intented purpose. What rods and actions should I look at for cranking?

And what line should I be using for each set up? Thanks for everyones help thus far, but I would prefer if people could stop suggesting US stores like cabela's. I live in Canada so its almost like your waving your adventage in front of my face... Lol!

I like 15# yo zuri on my t-rig rod. The crucial is MUCH more sensitive than you need for cranks/jerkbaits IMO. Its better used on bottom lures. Furthermore, at 50-70 bucks I believe it would be IMPOSSIBLE for you to find a better rod than the crucial for what you're wanting it for.

If you're going to use the crucial for that then for your treble lures, look into something a bit softer. It can be a medium/fast or even a mh /moderate. Just something to take the shock and load a little better on the cast also. I like 10-12# hybrid or flouro for that. This can be a "cheaper" rod in the sense that you want light and balanced to chunk and wind with. The sensitivity can be average. Lots of rods between 50-100$ will cover this need.

^ that's what I'm now using as my crank/jerkbait/trap rod. 7' m/mf. Working great so far on cranks and jerkbaits. Haven't thrown a trap on it yet. .... may be a bit too soft for where I throw traps! Lol. We shall see. ....
