Well this came to me about what do the fish see , and we the person fishing think's the fish see's . we all have a tackle box with a variety of lures in different sizes and color's, now getting on the color topic which i find a good one. when we choose whatever color it maybe and put it out in the water, are we sure that the fish see the color of the lure or a just a object,form,etc... now not sure on the answer because , during the day you'd think the fish would see the form of whatever color you use , but how bout the night time ? there's quite the difference , and less you can see if your that fish .

now somehow i was taught to use a darker color at night ,which i do and not gonna change either , and when the moon's out, it has it's effect too, but how bout when there's no moon and well pitch black out , sure we have lights but for us to see not the fish, and if the fish would see it , but what about the color seeing situation ?

using a dark color at night ,no moon it's a camouflage scenario for that fish,

First of all, bass can see a whole lot better than we in the dark, it's a matter of anatomy. Unlike many animals we don't posses an anatomic structure called "tapetum lucidum" which is a reflective coating inside the walls of the eye that increases the ammount of available light inside the eye chamber. Think of it as night vision goggles that many animals like bass have. That solves part of the mystery why bass can find a lure in very poor light conditions. Then there's another anatomical structure fish posses, the lateral line system that we do not have, the system consists of nervous terminals located in pits in the skin a long the middle line of the fish body, those nervous terminals are actually pressure sensors that can detect pressure waves generated by any mobile object. Then there's a sense that we understand, hearing, but unlike us bass can hear better because they live in an environment 750 times denser than air, sound waves are amplified by the denser conditions, it's louder and travels faster. For night fishing, for poor visibility conditions bait color matters very little, the fish isn't able to see the bait until it's very close to it. But it knows the bait is there.

What Raul said and at night they can still see outlines of the bait which will help when they finally can see what they are pursuing.

First, may I suggest you secure a copy of Dr. Keith Jones' book, Knowing Bass: The Scientific Approach to Catching More Bass?

Outstanding research on all aspects of bass and there is a powerful chapter on vision.

Please understand that the bass uses all of their senses when checking out a bait. If the bait fails any one test the bass will ignore or release the bait very fast that you will not be able to set the hook.

A bass' eyesight is designed for the water. Our vision is designed for the atmosphere. Two totally different environments. So what we see in a bait is totally different to what a bass sees in the same bait in the water.

According to Dr. Jones, visual lures are measured by bass by their size, shape, color and contrast, flash and action. Bass will strike a bait out of reaction, anger, hunger or to move it away from their area.

OK, with all that said, why do certain bait colors work better than others on specific waters, times of the year, when it is cold, when it is hot, when it is cloudy, when it is sunny, deep, shallow, low tide, high tide, at night and in between?

I have no idea. Dr. Jones gives his research results that we can parlay into successful bass fishing. Otherwise, it is back to trial and error for us with the guys who can figure it out doing the best.

What I found interesting in Dr. Jones' book is his input on the range of colors a bass can see. Reds, oranges, yellows and greens can be seen the best. Blue not so good. But Junebug and Moccasin Blue plus black/blue baits still work great in certain conditions.

Just remember color is only one variable to consider in the day and at night. So go out and have some fun with the colors and baits that work for you and consider getting Dr. jones book to understand your tormentor.

What?

Allow me to translate. I think it goes something like this :

"I started drinking several hours before I made this post, and felt it was a terrific idea to dazzle the interwebz with knowledge and skills, not to mention...... Crap, where the hell is my shoe. Someone better let the cat out. I am out of pretzel rods. "

ALL THAT MATTERS IS YOUR BOXES OF TACKLE ARE FULL WITH EVERY COLOR JUST IN CASE THEY ONLY WANT A COLOR YOU DO NOT HAVE WITH YOU....IF YOU LIKE A BAIT, BY 2 PACKS OF EVERY SIZE, COLOR, AND THEN BUY 2 PACKS OF THE BAIT THAT HAS A DRASTIC ACTION THAT IS DIFFERENT AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD......

THEN PURCHASE GARLIC SPIKE IT IN ALL COLORS TO DYE JUST IN CASE,  AND MAKE SURE NOT TO SPILL IT ON ANY CARPET, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A CO-ANGLER WHO WALKS ON SEATS WITH BOOTS ON.

THAT STUFF SHOULD BE ILLEGAL, AND DON'T EVER PUT IT IN SOMEONES 5 HOUR ENERGY BOTTLE AS A JOKE, THEY MAY JUST OPEN IT AND SLAM IT BEFORE SMELLING OR TASTING SINCE YOU WOULD NOT THINK TO DO THAT, BUT ALWAY'S MAKE SURE THAT A JOKE IS PROPERLY SET UP AND SOMEONE IS AROUND SO A SIP IS TAKEN AT MOST, SAME WITH BAITSAVER FOR LIVEWELLS CLUBS SEND OUT WHICH NEEDS A LABEL, SINCE TACKLE WAREHOUSE OR OVERSTOCK SENDS ENERGY DRINKS THAT LOOK THAT SAME..I DRANK A WHOLE BOTTLE OF BLUE LIVE WELL SAVER AT MY MAILBOX A FEW MONTHS AGO AND IT WAS AWFUL. FIGURED AND ENERGY DRINK AT 5 WAS COOL, BUT THIS MESSED UP MY PLANS FOR A FEW DAYS, AND NOW I AM DONE WITH MY RAMBLING, BUT I THINK THE GARLIC SPIKE IT WAS WAY WORSE CAUSE THIS GUY WAS HURTIN REAL BAD, BUT WE ALL HAD A GOOD LAUGH, JUST GLAD IT WAS NOT MY JOKE OR IDEA TO PLAY IT, I WOULD HAVE SUGGESTED SOME GOOD SHAD OR CRAW SCENT, F2, BANG....

I've done too much homework today to try and interpret this thread, but I think the topic is what bass see underwater. Here is my take on it.

Does it really matter what they see? Maybe they view chartreuse as black and they see black as chartreuse, but we still know when they want to hit a chartreuse or black colored lure!
