Squirmin Wormin Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 This has to do with i guess you'd say second market tackle, I know there's bait, lines ,rods,etc.. but i have both the top brands and second market tackle too, when it comes down to it i can't tell if any difference . cause at first your not sure, but one can't tell till used either. we all get the top brands sure cause they've made a name for themselves, like for instance trilene as far as lines go , i use bp mono now and used to use trilene, not saying what you have is bad either , but found this and other tackle that starting as a small time player, a big time hit. just like the rest of the second hand tackle as well. so do you have second market tackle and does it do just as well as your top market tackle? or just have top tackle and that's it ? lets say i recruited this tackle and it just went basic training and it made it. Super User Raul Posted August 22, 2014 Super User Posted August 22, 2014 There´s some very good "not that famous" gear out there, BPS line is a good example, many BPS lures are excellent ( for ex, the Stik-O ), Luck-E- Strike has some good lures, it´s a matter of searching which thing from what works well and what doesn´t. The biggest problema with "not that famous" is the lack of consistency in the product quality ( quality not only means pretty paint jobs ). Many many years ago down here there wasn´t good tackle, few places had something interesting and even so, not only it was expensive but there wasn´t much to choose from, we fortunate enough to travel "frequently" to the States could get better gear, but you had to make a good purchase cuz once you were at home you couldn´t even get a decent quality hook. So, there used to be a company called Jaifer which evidently putchased Chinese knock off cranks and that´s what they sold, I even purchased some of their stuff, they had this Cotton Cordell Spot copy that man, it was a bass magnet, don´t ask me what it had but with it I caugh much more fish than with the real Spot, being so good the first ones I got I went to get another batch and uh .... nope, more than half didn´t work properly, how well the baits worked varied from one batch to the next. That never happens with "good name brand", they are always consistent. Quote
Super User Marty Posted August 22, 2014 Super User Posted August 22, 2014 The biggest problema with "not that famous" is the lack of consistency in the product quality I'll offer up another alternative. It may very well be that the product quality is consistent and as good as anything else, but their marketing and promotional skills are below those of the more famous companies. It's not just fishing. I remember years ago a car got a terrible rating from Consumer Reports but was the top-selling car in America. That company knew how to sell. Quote
Super User CWB Posted August 22, 2014 Super User Posted August 22, 2014 Raul made a good point about BPS. They had a 25% off their branded tackle sale a while back. I was wandering around and saw the Stick-O section and for grins I grabbed a pack of Green Pumpkin and lo and behold they were soft as heck. I grabbed another color and they were a bit harder as I remember them. I found another color I liked that was soft and bought a bunch of each. I'm not shy about opening a bag and taking out a bait to see it's texture, unless it is in a bag where you have to rip off the top to get at them. I have an Extreme flippin' stick that was a replacement for one that broke the first time out. it is 7 or 8 years old now and sees heavy use. Guess that can be said of most rods though. Bound to get a bad one now and then. Major names are fewer and farther between though. Quote
