Jsuper Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 .270 is a great caliber especially since it's more available than 308 rounds. .270 rounds are so abundant that I though of switching over from my 308 just because I have to order them online and pay a decent chunk of cash unless you buy in bulk. As for using it on larger game it would be risky I wouldn't want to chance it on a trophy elk or try my luck on a mad bear however with the right conditions, bullet and shot placement a .270 would work. Just wouldn't be my first choice for big game. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted June 25, 2015 Super User Posted June 25, 2015 Oh quit it! 300 weatherby magnum is your new weapon, lol I have killed 2 elk & a mule deer with it.. It surely will drop ANY critter in the world, including BigFoot.. Happy Shooting!! Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted June 25, 2015 Super User Posted June 25, 2015 7.62x54R... I'm old school and vividly remember the Iron Curtain, the arms race etc. I just couldn't bring myself to the point of using a Russian round. Besides if I wanted to shoot a short .30 cal round I'd opt for a .308. Hunting ammo is much easier to find, brass is readily available for reloading. Allot of the 7.62x54 casing is steel: and please don't be shooting deer with a fmj military surplus ammo. FMJ ammo is designed to wound not kill. There is little energy transfer and no mushrooming of the round. 2 Quote

I wouldn't mind getting a VEPR in 54R or an AK in 5.45x39 or 7.62x39. Quote
Canyon explorer Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I believe when you move up to big boned animals e.g. Elk, brown bear and > you need to ramp up the energy always at the expense of velocity. I leave my 270 WSM home. If I had to stay under 30 caliber it would be a 7mm STW or Roy. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 6, 2015 Super User Posted August 6, 2015 I hunt bear with a 338wm. Quote
