Bruce424 Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Just wanted to know how many of you guys use braid and fish from the bank? Frogs jigs plastics what ever. And are you nervous about getting stuck and not getting free. not a huge fan of braid for that reason. I use Mccoy extra clear 15 lb 90 % of the time and when I get snagged on wood or what have you which is pretty much (cuz I fish jigs the right way...just kidding)I can break the line with only a little struggle. I can't fish the thick lilies at a lake effectively with this line. Thanks for the help. Quote
ABW Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 You shouldn't worry about the braid. The tree / whatever you're fishing in should be doing the worrying. Quote
Bruce424 Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 I guess I could use a leader. Just have to carry extra spool of line with me. Quote
Pinoy_Basser Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I use braid + FC leader most of the time. The Banks around I fish is usually lined with weeds or lotus. Braid helps a lot to cut those weeds when a fish is on. Aside from Bass there are also monster snakeheads where I fish and Braid is the key to yank them out along with about 5 lbs of weeds. The only time I use mono or FC is when I'm in open water. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted August 21, 2014 Super User Posted August 21, 2014 Whether you fish from shore or from the water, briad is a good choice. You have the choice of breaking strengths with braid just like you do with nylon mono or fluorocarbon. If you choose a weak mono line, it makes no difference if you are on shore or on the water if you loose your lure in cover. If you use a stronger line, you may get your lure back. A savy fisherman matches his line to the waters fished and the species sort after. I have broken 50# and 65# braid when hung up lots of times. I have also broken off lesser strengths of superlines. I don't use monos larger than 20# rated, but have broken off with that also lots of times. Quote
Gabriel052 Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I only use braid when Im throwing frogs, jigs, creature baits into real thick cover. For open water, stick with FC. It sinks, unlike braid, and depending on water clarity, FC is almost completely invisible as opposed to braided line Quote
michang5 Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I bank fish with braid and fluoro leader (unless throwing frogs and topwater). I went a week last year going straight 20# braid. I still got bites, but when I did get hung up, I would frequently break off long lengths of expensive braid getting unstuck. As much as it was about confidence, it was also about economics. Learn the Alberto knot. I can tie it very quickly. And when I get stuck, I usually break off at the hook knot. Occasionally at the leader knot, but it's still better than losing yards of braid. Quote
Mike2841 Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I would use a leader for jigs, and be prepared to lose a lot of them. Quote
John G Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I don't worry about hanging up with braid because I grab a stick that is laying on the ground and I wrap the braid around the stick and pull. Usually the hook straightens out or pulls free. 3 Quote

Othertimes I've dragged up very large branches, christmas trees and a pallet. 1 Quote
TiNuts Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I also do the stick trick. And have just drug up whatever I was snagged on almost as often as the knot breaks. 1 Quote

FWIW... I used my Boga grips to pull on the 20# braid. Several times it wasn't the hook that gave way, it was the braid. Maybe going up in 40+# test changes the equation, but I didn't like leaving yards of my line floating in the water. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted August 21, 2014 Super User Posted August 21, 2014 I use braid on my bank fishing setup. I use 10 - 15 lb Braid. I tend to use a leader most of the time. 8-10 lb FC. depending on the conditions. Quote

Depends on what snagged. I've straightened out jigs a couple times with 30# braid. BUT the hook has to be what is causing the snag. Last night I was fishing a jig off the bottom in the river with 40# braid. The jig head must of caught between the rocks because the line is what broke. Add me to the list of guys wrapping braid around a stick to break it. Quote
SudburyBasser Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I use braid virtually every I fish from the bank... can't say I've ever had a problem. Quote
