Super User Sam Posted August 20, 2014 Super User Posted August 20, 2014 It is short but it is a warning to all of us not to take thunderstorms for granted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJ29SKHhu9o 2 Quote
B-Dozer Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 sound travels about a mile in 5 seconds. fewer than 30 seconds between lightning and thunder means you are in danger Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted August 20, 2014 Global Moderator Posted August 20, 2014 Whew!! I hear about way too many of these close calls... It's enough to make a grown man call for his Mama. Dont mess with a thunderstorm on the water fella's....Find shelter if you can....better yet head in when you know one's heading your way. Mike Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted August 21, 2014 Super User Posted August 21, 2014 That's nothing to fool with. When I hear thunder I head back to the ramp. Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted August 21, 2014 Super User Posted August 21, 2014 Would be tuff to get off water around here when here thunder.....seems like most every day for the last month you can hear it in the afternoon. Personally just try not to run in open and stay close to bank. Quote

But once it gets close, time to call it day or at least wait for the storm to pass. Quote
CarolinaBoy4Life Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Very scarey stuff. I wouldn't leave at the sound of thunder but I would be put on notice and pay attention to the storm and weather around me. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted August 22, 2014 Super User Posted August 22, 2014 Crazy stuff. I've had a couple of encounters where I was caught in a lightning storm out in the boat. I don't ever want to experience it again. If thunder is even remotely close I stay close to the ramp and I get off the water if I have any doubts. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted August 22, 2014 Super User Posted August 22, 2014 It is closer than you think How Far Away Is Lightning From Me?To estimate the distance between you and a lightning flash, use the "Flash to Bang" method: If you observe lightning, count the number of seconds until you hear thunder. Divide the number of seconds by five to get the distance in miles. Example: If you see lightning and it takes 10 seconds before you hear the thunder, then the lightning is 2 miles away from you (10 divided by 5 = 2 miles). If Thunder is heard The Lightning is... 5 seconds after a Flash 1 mile away 10 seconds after a Flash 2 miles away 15 seconds after a Flash 3 miles away 20 seconds after a Flash 4 miles away 25 seconds after a Flash 5 miles away 30 seconds after a Flash 6 miles away 35 seconds after a Flash 7 miles away 40 seconds after a Flash 8 miles away Since lightning can strike up to 10 miles from a storm, you should seek safe shelter as soon as you hear thunder or see lightning. Get to a safe location if the time between the lightning flash and the rumble of thunder is 30 seconds or less. Quote
Todd2 Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Since lightning can strike up to 10 miles from a storm, you should seek safe shelter as soon as you hear thunder or see lightning. The best advice I've seen on this site in a long time. Quote
