ConcreteJungle Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 The wife knows! I’m addicted During post spawn, I was fishing with a Shakespeare graphite spinning reel combo and while casting on the bank, my immediate thought was dang, I’m hung again. Needless to say that I was not hung, there was a fish on the hook (never felt him bite). After reading on the forums, I read about better quality rods and I immediately went to BP and purchased St Croix Premier 7’ M/ fast action graphite rod w/ Shimano Sahara 2500FE 6.2:1 reel. I added 12lb fluorocarbon line I would like to mainly use this rod for crank bait, swim bait and top water St. Croix Premier 7’ MH/fast action graphite rod with a Pflueger Supreme 6.2:1. I also added 12lb fluorocarbon line I would like to mainly use this rod for Carolina Rigging , Spinner bait and Jigs After reading several post, I realized that I need to change the fishing line on the medium rod (used for crank bait) from fluoro to mono. I read on the post that fluorocarbon line does not sink and then I read that it does sink. Will someone please clarify that because my chug bug goes underwater? Can someone give some recommendation on a quality mono (no braid please) that will work for an OK setup? Do I need to swap my reels and place the Shimano Sahara on the MH rod? Are there any other recommendations on my setup (besides buying a bait caster)? I will probably buy another set up in the future (been looking at the 7’ Duckett Micro Magic) but until then I want to learn to properly use the set up in place. Thanks in Advance. I have learned from the videos and reading on the site but I still a lot to learn. Keep posting guys!! Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted August 19, 2014 Super User Posted August 19, 2014 FC sinks. I use mono for topwater, P-Line makes a nice mono. Quote
uncustered Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 For some reason I rarely see folks talk of the sufix tritanium. I started using it surf fishing where abrasion resistance truly matters. That's my preference for mono, and I've had no problems with the seagaur red label for flouro.... Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted August 19, 2014 Super User Posted August 19, 2014 Just know that you don't NEED mono for cranking, I crank with braid and love it. You can feel absolutely everything your crank does and what kind of cover its coming through or when the slightest bit of grass in on the trebles! And you can get pretty good depth with braid because of its thin diameter even though it floats. Don't be afraid of the zero stretch factor, a correctly set drag and good rod compensate for it Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted August 19, 2014 Super User Posted August 19, 2014 FC sinks. I'd switch it to Berkley Trilene XL. Quote
ConcreteJungle Posted August 19, 2014 Author Posted August 19, 2014 Thanks to all! What about my rod set ups? Would anyone recommend doing something different with the rods besides changing the fishing line on the cranking rod to mono? I welcome all comments as to gain alot of different insight. I am still learning Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 19, 2014 Super User Posted August 19, 2014 http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/130634-rod-selection-the-basics/ Monofilament for treble hooks. I like #12 Sunline Super Natural. Fluorocarbon for single hooks. Baitcasting = #12 Seaguar AbrazX. Spinning = #8 Seaguar InvizX Alternatives include Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Izorline Quote
Balshy Fishing Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Would that seagur or yozuri be good for frogs and cover? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 19, 2014 Super User Posted August 19, 2014 No, that calls for a stronger line. Maybe 20 lb braid for spinning tackle, 50 lbs for baitcasting. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 19, 2014 Super User Posted August 19, 2014 Soft line handles best on spinning reels. Sunline Super Natural, Sufix Elite, Trilene XL. I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones I have used. I am not crazy about Big Game for a spinning reel. Don't know how Sufix Siege would work on a spinning reel, but I love it on my baitcast reels. I am using 8# and 12# in clear and Neon Tangerine. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted August 19, 2014 Super User Posted August 19, 2014 Your set up's sound fine. I would just switch the M rod to mono so you can throw your top water baits and you should be good to go. Quote
warpath58 Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 I have 8 Duckett rods in spinning and casting and I have used just about every rod brand on the market in the past 40 plus years that I have fished, and I absolutely love these I am using the Micro Magic style they have 3 levels of rod from $99-$199. The Micro Magic run $149-$169. The spinning rod has a Diawa Steez ex3012h reel and I am using D.A.M.Tectan Premium Plus mono in 13.9 lbs size. This is the best Mono I have ever used. You should give it a try its hard to find sometimes but worth the effort. I got the last spools I bought on Ebay. Hope this helps Quote
Balshy Fishing Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Man, I've been using 10# Strenn Mono Quote
