Durable Rods

I have broken three rods this summer and need to find a good durable rod for under $100. Got any suggestions?

Maybe try a berkley lighting rod or ugly stick.

I´ve got absolutely no idea how you fish but 3 rods in one summer is 3 too many rods, I´ve fished for over 4 decades and I´ve broken 3 rods in that period of time.

 

I do have a suggestion: Shakespeare Ugly Stick.

 

They were able to stand my friend Jack, then probably they can stand you.

I would venture a guess the rods broke while high sticking fish when swinging them into the boat, correct?

Don't boat flip anything over 1.5 lbs

I know they say not to boat flip bigger fish but I do it a lot. I feel as long as you use correct technique and use your hand about a foot above the reel seat to assist in the lifting then it doesn't put as much stress on the rod and it will be fine. I've boat flipped a couple 5 lb smallies with a glass crankin rod and haven't had any problems. BUT, I could just be very lucky haha.

Boat flipping fish to 5lbs is not an issue when attention is paid to not getting the rod into a position to straight up and down. Getting it that way puts to much bend in the road and it will snap.

How does anyone break 3 rods in just a few months? Boat flipping or not it's user error and buying another rod isn't going to do anything but give your 4th broken rod. Do you rods get abused by being transported or tossed around? If for some reason you can't figure out what's going wrong maybe ask a fishing buddy or record some video of what your doing at the time of the breaks.

As I posted in an earlier thread, the dead lift capacity of modern high modulus blanks is surprisingly high IF the rod is kept as close to parallel to the ground as possible. Pretty much like Brian said. Boat flipping is still a practice  I discourage due to the toll it takes on both gear and fish, but if it's going to be done at least do it "right".  Handle your rods appropriately to avoid compromising the blank with dings, dents and scratches, and avoid any motion that flexes the tip beyond 90* to the butt and your problems will go away.

Boat flipping a fish, even if the technique is correct, is still wrong and if you talk to anyone who is involved with designing blanks they will tell you that the rod is not meant to have the tip stressed in that manner and just because a rod can handle it doesn't make it right. I talked to a very knowledgeable person who works for St. Croix and I was told they can make rods super light, even lighter than what is now on the market but anglers keep insisting to boat flip fish and it ends up as warranty claims eventually.  The OP broke 3 rods, I'd say that is either horrible luck or the angler is doing something to cause it and that can be boat flipping or high sticking. Someone here broke a rod and had a video that showed a classic text book case of high sticking and that person didn't see any problem and that is why it is hard to know if it is user error.

The only time I broke a rod was to justify to my wife I needed a new one. I don't know what happened baby, it was weird. It was just a cheapy bps rod though

Yes, but just one of them, another got stepped on, and not sure how the third one broke

Those are decent rods, no rod is going to take getting stepped on and high sticked. Ugly sticks will take more abuse but are horrible for anything other than moving baits. Just have to be a little more careful.
